I think that most animal control offices wouldn't be so overburdened if so many people didn't let their dogs roam.

OK fellow BYCers, please reread the original post.

I know he didn't do it on purpose.

Its our responsibility.

I just needed to tell someone.

I feel bad enough.

Stop telling her things she all ready knows. She isn't placing the blame on anyone but herself. She just needed to discuss it amongst friends. Please remember that.

I assume that when a dog is chasing a slow moving vehicle it's very easy for the dog to run under the tire. There's a big difference between a dog getting bumped and rolled out of the way by a slow moving vehicle than one that was caught under a tire. The mailman's vehicle was on the road legally. The dog wasn't. If the dog was little, he probably didn't even see it close to the tires. This is more of a pet management problem than an evil mailman problem. If a person knows that their dog chases cars or harrasses people, it is extremely irresponsible to not contain or train the dog. Why would it take 3 dead dogs to correct this? Why blame the mailman? Gosh, I guess maybe he should just take one for the team and swerve and hit a telephone pole or roll his vehicle in the ditch.

Lesson for the day:
If your dog chases the mail truck every day, it is inevitable that sooner or later he will be killed by the mail truck.

Agreed.....now I will probably get flamed for this but I don't think the mailman is entirely innocent. If indeed he was upset over dogs barking, chasing etc he could very well have acted on that. Yes I know that the pup shouldn't have been there. I totally agree 100% on that and hopefully lesson learned and the dogs will be contained here on out. But in our society today common courtesy and respect has gone out the door. I honestly believe this mailman acted on his resentment. He could easily have called and reported them versus running over 3 dogs. Just my opinion..... I have been animal rescue close to 18 years and the stories I've seen and heard over the years are very similar in nature to this. There is no regard for animal life anymore.

I absolutley agree. It is shocking to think that somebody would know that their dog was chasing the mail truck everyday and had even cornered the mailman on occasion and they still didn't have the common courtesy and respect for another human being to correct it. It is shocking to think that 3 dogs had to die for an owner to have enough common sense and love for their animals to rectify the problem. Sorry. My sympathy is for the dogs. We as humans often make our own bad luck. Sometimes we need a reality check.

Absolutely! I'm sad for the dogs......

I'm wondering if the mailbox could be moved out to the road so the poor guy doesn't get cornered on the porch again. I know UPS and Fedex aren't supposed to use the mailbox, but they toss my stuff over the fence.

I don't know what your mail trucks look like where you are, but here, they are closed-top jeeps with no doors. The newer ones are essentially ice cream trucks with no doors and music.
If I were a mailman and had dogs barking at me, chasing me, cornering me on the patios, and I had no doors on my mail truck, I'm sorry, I'd be seriously acting just like your mailman and saying bad thinks to your neighbor. I'm just coming from the angle of a person who is out there doing that every day with minimal protection.

It may or may not have been intentional. It doesn't matter, though. He comes by almost every day, so the odds of him hitting loose dogs is much higher than other delivery services hitting loose dogs. If FedEx had hit 3 of your dogs, my eyebrows would raise, but not much. Either way, look at it from his side. IF he accidentally hit the dogs, imagine how that would feel to someone. IF he purposefully hit the dogs, imagine what would push him to do that. You outlined quite a bit of it. I don't think he got this job with the hopes of running over dogs. I'm just saying, have a little compassion for the mailman who has had it up to HERE with being chased and attacked by everyone's dogs.

And good luck this evening with your son.

A guy that works for my DH has run over a dog and a 2 cats of mine in our driveway. I know he didn't mean it either but I did tell my dh to make him park his truck down by the gate from now on. Nothing else has been run over since then and that was a couple years ago when he last killed one.

Thank you! I kept reading all these negative posts thinking,"but I said it was totally OUR fault". We are suppose to be supportive and forgiving people. AND for the last time, OUR dogs do not roam. This happened right in front of our house in the driveway. Oreo was HOME when it happened. He was NOT at the neighbors mailbox or anywhere where he wasn't suppose to be. Thanks to all of you for your kind words, you know who you are and to all you negative nellies: thhhhhhhppppppppphhhhhhh Or however that is spelled. I guess this just needs to be blocked or whatever the moderators do.

You didn't say the dog was in your yard. You said the dog was hit by a vehicle in front of your house.

You are welcome. You can PM a mod and ask for it to be closed.
