maine chickenstock!! pictures of the event!!

I know having any kind of advance count will be hard, just looking for any number on which to base our purchase of food. If we have lots of leftover soda and chips, NP, we'll take care of those, lol.

I brought my 8 year old son and his best friend to the store with me and figured I'd do a little informal market research with them in preparation for CS. I asked them, "if you had to have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch, what kind of jelly would you want?" My son said, "I'd go hungry." His friend, "can't I have Fluff instead?" What ever happened to PB&J? lol When pressed, both agreed that if they were FORCED to have jelly, it would have to be strawberry, lol. I just thought it was cute.

If it's not too hot, I may bring my favorite pullets, two Silver-laced Wyandottes named "Gloria" and "Norma Jean" after the two female penquins in Happy Feet (because they looked like penquin chicks, hehe). I may also bring my White Leghorn cockerel, "Wee Man" and one of the WL pullets I call "Nike" because she's so fast. Maybe I'll bring a couple of our Cornish Rock meat birds, too.

My kids wont touch PB&J either, maybe fluff. They are more tuna and ham sandwich eaters. I was never really big on the PB&J thing either.

i wouldnt go that far with the food, it is a morning thing and most people are gone by or leaving for 1 , see how many replies are on this thread and we can go from there, i have had quite a few replies of interest from my ads also,

Here's a rough start at a list. 16 members including yourself have indicated an interest in attending. There are 9 people coming that I have invited and feel fairly confident that they will be there. So 10 for me.

Maybe some of the others have an idea of approx. number that they feel will show up. I don't think your 200 is that far off if the weather favors us. (bite my tongue)

Just a thought: I should think 200 is looking pretty good for a count. Is this the first Maine Chickenstock or have there been others before us?
One thing you can do about the food is to purchase sealed cold cut meats, put it on ice until you need it, that way IF you take any home, then you can freeze it for your own family and not waste bread, meats and cheese's. Condiments of course can rest on a bucket of ice to protect the mayo.
Also, shred some lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and onions (peppers etc) bring the large amount, cut some at the grounds if you need more then the basic amounts. Keep cool on ice.
This will help to prevent waste and if all else fails, sell the veggies and meat packages after the event to the rest of us, also you can take it home and freeze it. All chickens will appreciate the scraps so don't waste those outside leaves and tomato ends (unless you give them to the horses)!
You can make sun tea as we go through the day so to keep cost down on atleast that part, bring artificial sweetners (I can grab a box of Sweetnlow) and sugar for the teas, coffee etc if you do that, and powdered creamers!!! Then no waste on that either.
Apples are a great food that you can double duty it. If you do not sell a lot, then you can take home and eat them, or, feed them to your horses, not sure what else you can give horses, but those are suggestions. Rolls, keep them basic so you can take home and freeze for multiple use.
(I sound cheap, sorry, but none of us can afford waste and we want to see the rescue make money!)

I just returned from vacation and found the story on Maine Chickenstock. I'd be very interested in attending but I have nothing to trade. May I still attend?

There are a lot of people from Mass and NH who were interested in a chicken swap. MaineChickenCharmers is a small yahoo group that expressed interest in doing a something similar to what you're planning.

I would love to see what others might have available in the call duck family. Currently, I have a pair(1ea. M & F) of elderly bantams and a pair of call ducks. More call ducks wouldn't be too hard to accomodate!
(Have bookmarked this article to hear any responses)

Thanks,

Sylvia

I have nothing to trade, swap, sell and I keep saying this "Just say NO"...lol to bringing more home.
Please feel free to attend. It is awsome, if anything like the Milford, NH gathering, it will be a highlight of the summer (maybe I am being simple...lol). If you would like to donate something to the Chinese Auction table, we would appreciate it and this BYC event isn't just for BYCers, its open and free to the public. The more the Merrier!

Forest_Nymph, you don't have to buy/sell/trade anything. This is just for fun and to meet (as Wendy puts it) more chicken geeks like ourselves.
