Maine

Just had a light dusting here. Then rain showers. Still a cold, raw day though. I have my tarps ready to put around the coop area and some of the pen. Just have to get motivated to do it. And I have at least picked up some insulation for the horse water tank.

Stupid turkey trick of the day. I opened, or tried to open, the garbage can that holds the bird food. As soon as there is a gap one turkey jumps up and sticks his head in to get at the food. Then another turkey jumps up on the cover that then slams shut on the neck of the first turkey, So I have one turkey flailing about since he could not get his head out of the trash can and the other one refusing to get off the lid. Too a few seconds but I finally shooed the second bird away and was able to free the first one.

Both birds were fine but boy are they determined to get at that food. They are worse than the dogs when it comes to feeding time.

And to make things more fun today I took three of the dogs with me while I ran errands. While I was in Market Basket, great store by the way, the dogs decided that my water bottle was a new chew toy and one of them chewed off the top. Another crunched and aspirin bottle but fortunately did not get at the aspirin. They also ripped apart a couple plastic bags and spread my work stuff all over the truck. I then took two of them, the Pit and the Ibizan, into Pet Smart. They acted liked out of control children in a toy store. The Ibizan decided that another dog looked at her the wrong way so she barked ferociously at the intruder. Both dogs had to sniff every treat. Then the Ibizan spotted the birds and small animals and wanted to go see them. I said no and we finally were able to check out and go back to the truck. Normally they are well behaved but today they were just so wound up for some reason. Of course now all the dogs are relaxing as calm as can be in the house.

My girls were out tasting the snow. It didn't seem to bother them at all. Today I was talking with the friend who borrowed my small tractor (while she was getting her coop finished). One of her EE turned out to be a beautiful, well behaved roo. So, I can either get some eggs from her this spring, or rent her roo for a couple of weeks. I'll lean towards getting eggs from her b/c I want to keep my flock closed. I really don't need to get more chicks, but the idea of hatching some more is just too tempting. I'm wondering what her dark colored (reds and blacks) EE roo over her PBR pullets will produce. Any guesses if it'll be sex linked OE??

I was surprised that my older flock wanted to go out in the snow. It did melt fairly quickly. We have scheduled the putting tarps on the chicken run and plastic on the end of the hoop coop for tomorrow.

We just found out that company is coming for Thanksgiving. Normally, we just get any old cheap supermarket turkey, but this year we hope to order a turkey "that has never been spoken to harshly" (DH's family code word for all-natural). I hope it is not too late to order one. We put in an email request and should find out soon.

SCG, you need to plant garlic tomorrow! I think the ground is going to freeze up soon.

Apparently sleeping in 20 minutes allowed me to miss the snowfall and I am so glad for both the rest and the ignorance.

Today was a baking day and oddly enough it was the day when the birds just had to all keep coming out front near the road- I do mean all, ducks, muscovies, geese, chickens of every breed.

You want to talk about badly behaved turkeys??? My aunt had some a few years back, on the next road over from me. These turkeys were as free range as the come- as in "ranging" all over the road! This is a rural road, and thankfully everyone is related ( she's really my great aunt, and the rest of the people on the road are her brothers and sister, nieces and nephews..) They would wander up to a mile or so away! They visited everyone. Eventually, it became a problem though, because they were getting on peoples cars, and one of the nephews ended up having one for dinner.....

I went out this morning to put the candy board on the beehive. All over the top of the hive were turkey prints. BAD!

Good to know it's not just my idiots that like to scratch up vehicles and get lost all over the road. I sometimes come outside and hear WHIRRP WHIRRUP of the turkeys trying to echo locate the coop again from the neighbors yard.

Idiots. But hopefully tasty ones.
