Maine

I'm letting them choose where they want to ride out the storm. If they want to stay under cover they can. If they want to be outside they can. It is open where their paddock is so I am not worried about falling trees. It will be interesting to see where they choose to be. Most storms they just hang out in the open. The only time they really use the shelter is when the bugs are out since the shelter is dark and the bugs don't tend to go in it.

Keeping mine in tomorrow. They get high up in the brush when they are scared and then they are almost impossible to get down. I'm afraid if they get up in the brush with the driving rain all night they may get cold, stressed, and sick.

So, they will be cooped up like the rest of us birds!

all of mine are cooped until after the storm. dog crated up the turkeys and removed tarps. turkeys are normally in the dog kennel, but last yr in a big wind storm the wind grabbed it like a sail and it collapsed.
hopefully just alot of rain and not much else to talk about.

coops are all set up for the show. the cows are already at the show and will be riding it out there. apparently the cows have been there for the past week. whY??? anyway, the poultry barn is ready and that's what counts.

I have birds entered but I think I'll keep them at home.

good news joanie, you can't coop in until monday due to the storm and it' s being planned that judging will be on tuesday. I feel bad for the cows and the flying debrise.

Two of mine are already way up in the trees! They NEVER go that high. I got the rest into the coop and it wasn't easy, the were all way up. I think they know bad weather is coming. I'll have to find a way to corner the last two in the morning. It's so still, hot, and muggy in my house tonight. Yuck.

All my critters were acting strange today. The ducks went back in the barn most all day until I went down to work inside it. The chickens and turkeys went in back of the house into the woods and did not come out until late afternoon.
Grace the horse was nervous and jumpy all day. She has a run in and I put a fresh round bale in today, but tomorrow afternoon I will put her in her winter stall where she feels safe. I am still not sure what I will do about letting the poultry out in the AM, I am afraid they may all hide instead of retuning to the barn. It is a sturdy barn sheltered by a hill so a safe haven for them. Porky the Potbelly pig is in a stall that will be all dry, and I have 100 gallons of water stored. I am a mile and a half down a dirt road so if there is major power outages we will not be back on the grid first, for sure.
My only worry is my freezer, it is full. I just put 7 Muscovies in it and have not even had time to try one.
Anyone have any favorite recipes for Muscovy? They are very lean meat I understand from my research and can dry out quickly.

I am officially battened down here, put Grace the horse in her stall this AM, she is happy, she feels very secure in there, she has an entire bale of hay, two buckets of water and 4 inches of shavings, eat sleep and poop, kinda like a baby!
I decided to keep all the poultry in, they were all settling down except the three turkeys, it would not surprise me if they flew up through the 2nd floor opening where the hay is thrown down and out the second story of the barn. We shall see. I am glad I decided to keep them all in, I will relax now, and the barn is big enough for them all to choose their zones.
Now it seems like a good morning for a farm breakfast!
Happy Trails!

The ducks were out this morning during one of the downpours having a major pool party. They were splashing around in the kidddie pool and playing in the mud in their pen. Just acting like a bunch of kids.

The rooster and his hen were out in the yard wandering around. They did take refuge under the horse trailer during the major downpour but came out once that one died down. The turkeys pretty much are in the coop and under the deck. I'm sure everyone will take refuge as the day goes on.

I let the dogs out this morning in the rain only to hear a hen bock bocking outside. apparently she was late to get to the coop before they were locked up and stayed out all night, got her penned and let the others out for a few hours to the pen.

Mine are all locked up... even though it's not bad out now, just rain, the weather report is that it's going to get really windy this afternoon. I know once I let them out they won't go inside until dark, no matter what.

I got them a flock block yesterday, and they're busy working on that and trying to find the escape hatch.

My sister in Maryland has 4 trees down in her yard, and one of them is on her house... no major damage, thank goodness.
