Egg count is still slow here. The only winter I have easy-to access records for shows 5 "bottom" weeks, with the first gains in early January. I have records for other winters in a totally disorganized heap of papers, so I'm not really looking at those.

This year, I thought I had gone through the 5 slowest weeks, but last week was the slowest yet. I think the cold weather did them in. This week we are ahead of last by 3 eggs, but the week isn't over yet, so I'm not sure it will be much of a gain. Weekly totals, starting in mid-October went like this:
94, 87, 83, 65, 61, 68, 57, 42, 41, 41, 36, 37, 25 (last week).

and I thought I was the only one who kept meticulous ocd records. Lol. I'll share my numbers tomorrow if I think of it.

I should dig out my records... maybe Friday night. I really know how to live. I've got 5 biddies laying, now. That's huge compared to earlier.

One thing (besides weather) that may be affecting my egg counts is that my pullets were born in March and April. Maybe it isn't the birth date, but the breed, but this is the first time I remember pullets molting in the winter. Mini-molts, but molts, regardless. Pullets born in May, in previous years, did not molt.

My seeds have arrived! A few backorders, but not too bad.

We had a bit of a disappointment here yesterday. Someone came to write up an estimate for having a basement poured under our house (we are on posts). We have been dreaming of all the things we could do with a basement. The estimate arrived, and it was way too pricey to justify.
We do have a small basement under our addition, full of water and mold (the walls are pressure treated). We're hoping maybe we can afford to get that replaced for a lower price. A small, dry basement will be better than none.

im from the midcoast and we wrapped ours in tarp to keep the wind out and keep a heat lamp and plenty of fresh straw and they have been fine all winter so far even thru the ice storm with five days of no power (no heat lamp)

You all make me jealous with your egg counts. I'm still (thankfully) at one egg/every other day from my faithful girl. Granted, I didn't give them any light and they've all been through some pretty hard molts. Hatch dates 2/21 and 3/4. Next year, I plan to give them light.

I keep a diary style record for chickens. If something happens today I can look back in the notes to see if it happened before and what did or didn't work, etc. This year I have a monthly planner that was on clearance for $1 for egg counts and egg info only. I'll admit it- I have a file set up for every breed, expense to income, contacts and supply prices all on the computer plus written files and of course a couple of calendars just for chicken stuff! It's sort of like raising children just a whole lot more of them;-)

I'm getting 1-3 goose eggs daily, 3-4 duck eggs daily, and still ZERO chicken eggs. But, I am hopeful. The girls have been out in the yard all week, as opposed to staying in the coop. Here's hoping they start laying soon.
