Wondering if it's worth claiming selling eggs as a business? I know I won't get rich selling eggs or even break even but just wondering. Anyone?

Taxes. That's what brought that same question up for us. If you make under a certain amount of money you don't have to claim it as a business here. As I understand it (just answers to a few questions for our tax preparer) once you subtract your expenses then your profit is what is taxed. The more money you actually make (yay!) the more you pay in taxes(boo!).

I decided against it because it seemed like it would be a red flag for being audited and I really don't care to keep wonderful records on the number of eggs I've sold, the feed, etc. For me, I have the birds whether they lay eggs or not (although I prefer them to lay). I don't want to have to be subject to any rules or restrictions, and I don't want to be audited and have to defend anything.

Totally not worth it unless you have other things you sell as part of your "farm" company. You have to make a certain amount per year to file as a business. I forget what it is 3k or 4k. They go easy on you for the first few years if you don't turn a profit but after that they will tell you that you are just a hobbyist and cant file as a business BUT if you are smart - it can be worth it for those first years if you are making a real go at it.

Oh and congrats on the olive egg Ash! I hope going forward I will end up with some down the line. I am sure I will with the Marans roos and the Am hens.

Not chicken related, but I snapped this really cute picture of my son making juice this morning, just in time for my Snapshot Sunday post. I really wanted to share.

People get heated (pun intended) about lots of chicken rearing issues. Heat, bedding, feed, space requirements, breeding practices. The list goes on and on. I just got my first negative comment on my homesteading blog, followed by a very angry email. The post was about chicken care. I guess people don't have an opinion about how I grow my vegetables or what I feed my family, or even criticize how I clean my home, but how dare I use sand in my coop, leaving my poor defenseless chicks to drown in pools of bacteria. It's a wonder I survive long enough out there to collect eggs. You'd think I'd be dead with some illness from all the diseases I've exposed my chickens to.

Sorry, that turned into a rant and I promised my husband I wouldn't dwell anymore lol.
MEMama, I am so sorry that someone was so nasty to you. There is a way to express your opinion and a way to be downright mean. Since I am new to chickens, I read a lot about them. Unfortunately there is a lot of disagreements among people who call themselves experts in chicken rearing. They even attack each other's opinions openly on their blogs and facebook pages. I have learned a lot from several chicken bloggers I follow (including one who commented on your blog) and I don't like seeing them attack each other. I wish they would just focus on sharing their knowledge with their fans and stop criticizing those who don't agree with their way of doing things.

Unfortunately, as your blog readership grows and you put yourself out there, you leave yourself open to other's opinions. It is up to you to decide how to handle it. A lot of people truly believe that their way is the right way of doing things and everything else is wrong. Some think that they are trying to help you by educating you about something that you may not know. Please try to not let it get you down and focus instead on the positive comments.

Nice pic MeMama. I love the innocence of youth, and how the simplest of routines can be such an adventure.

Anya, I thought of you this morning when I went out to check the nest boxes and the hinges were frozen solid. Even with a lot of banging on the hinges, they wouldn't budge, and I was afraid I'd break the door if I forced it... So I'll just wait for it to thaw. I thought of blowing on it, but with my limited depth perception, I was afraid I'd freeze my lips to the hinge... Not a pretty picture!!
