Maine

The eggs are lovely! So, wait, I'm confused, - are the bronze green and speckled olive laid by the same bird? I like both, but especially the speckled one! I do have one bird that lays a speckled olive egg, but I have no idea where she came from (as in, which hen I crossed with my rooster to get her). Who lays the pretty cream egg?
My RO and Mottled Java lay the same color. I can tell them apart by shape sometimes and by slight speckling on one end of the Javas. The bronze and green speckled are laid by the same bird. When the Marans bloom doesn't really cover the egg it looks like the speckled one, hence why the early Marans eggs have spots but not later because those spots are spread out better across the egg. I would guess your OE is a cross between a blue egg layer and either a Marans or Welsummer as my Wellies used to have spots in the beginning just like the Marans.

No school here today. No motivation either. Sinus issues have me slogging around for birds and kids alike.

The news weather guy just said the snow has finally gotten here to southern Maine. Do they not look out the window ? It started snowing at 8 this morning. Crazy! I feel bad for the cooped up chickens but what can we do? I am sitting here planning a revamp of my chicken coop on paper of course. I've learned a lot about what works and doesn't work this winter. And if course planning my veg garden. Busy spring ahead for sure!!! Cannot wait!

Hey there fellow Mainers. My partner and I are new here at BYC! Just thought we would poke in on this thread and give a short shout out. We are soon to be the proud owners of our first flock ever. We have decided to raise Dominiques as we both fancy them quite so! We are wondering if there is anyone in the state who might sell day olds or breeds Dominiques? Hope everyone stays safe and warm during this so called Nor Eastah!

Welcome! Glad to hear that you're planning to raise Dominiques. They're an excellent breed IMO. I loved their personalities. I started 3 Doms last spring, but unfortunately, they were all roosters. I am not aware of anyone in the state that sells day old Doms. I am getting replacement chicks on April 7, along with some other breeds. Several hatcheries carry them. I've heard that Cackle has the best hatchery stock of Doms. You can also order chicks or eggs from some breeders out of state. I wish you the best of luck. I'd love to see this breed become more popular, especially in Maine with our cold weather.

Welcome 87jmchugh!

I don't know about the Dominique's, but someone else on here might chime in.

I'm enjoying this snow. Only a half-day of school here, so I was able to get out for a nice ski in the woods after school. A great way to kick off my vacation! Technically, it doesn't start until Saturday, but I'll be quite surprised if there is school tomorrow.

1/2 day here for one...the other I kept home much to her dismay. My 11yo broke her foot in 2 places Tuesday nite. She was at her basketball banquet (pizza party and awards) and the girls decided to play tag instead of basketball. Well my daredevil thought it would be a great idea to climb high up on rolled up gymnastic mats...about 6' high. ..Well she fell off. She didnt tell me until about 45" later. She was walking on it and didnt complain until I said it was time to go. Well I iced it and off to bed she went. She whined alot...but if u knew her this is usually normal for her to do if she doesn't want to go to school the next day. Well yesterday am woke up and checked it out...yup swollen and bruised. ..so 3 doc appt and xrays later ... confirmed broken with a 3rd area of concern. So my little farmer was giving me the instructions for caring for the chickens! Lol!!!

Poor chickens were not so happy about having to stay in the coop today. I felt bad :(

My girls got out for a bit before the snow started. When I closed the outside door I let them into the solarium until bedtime. Not as good as outside, but at least a change of scenery.

Welcome! Glad to have you join the group. Check with Mike. If you search in the BYC search bar for RMT Farm you should find him. I can't remember his user name off hand. He can track down anything in Maine.
