Maine

MustardTiger, that dog on the left, it looks like a black mouth cur mix to me!
She does look like a cur. That is Etta and she is from Tennessee. She was born in a foster and her mom is a treeing walker coonhound/beagle and dad is a black lab/pit mix. So - probably a mix similar to where Curs came from in the end.

May be. I have a full blooded Black Mouth Cur out of Mississippi, so when I see another, my heart delights! I love our boy, Rebel. He saves me daily, sometimes hourly from squirrels! LOVES to bark at and chase them. He did have to learn the hard lesson of leaving our chickens alone that first summer though!

MustardTiger, Penny had a sweet face!

I thought I had a local source for Doms but they cleaned house this Fall...a lot of older birds. I had been hoping for some hatching eggs.

My dogs had a squirrel cornered in the pen yesterday. I don't think the squirrel realized the dogs couldn't get into the pen with it. Saw 3 fat ones race out of the pen this morning. May be time for some target practice.

Coop Chick: Let me know if you do find a local source of Doms or eggs.

Does any one have experience ordering from Paris Farmer's Union (Mt. Healthy)? I'm just now finding out that 2 of the breeds I've ordered from MMc are not available. Nice to find out early enough to do something about it. So, I may end up cancelling my Mc order. Anybody in Central Maine ordering from any hatcheries this spring?

I have chicks hatching now and a few months old, thinning the flock of youngsters. Chocolate bantam orpingtons, standard black orps, buff laced brahmas (selling adult pr as well) .

Hey folks! I hope you're all surviving the weather. My chickens aren't too fond of this white stuff on the ground, but they like to eat it off my boots. Silly birds. I've gotten to the point where all of my girls are laying now, which is awesome. My two little Araucanas are slowly getting used to the egg-laying business, and I'm happy to have blue eggs in my carton! I'm planning on making a brooder for a mix of chicks, and I'm very excited to raise those little guys! I was going to go out and buy supplies for it with my tax refund, but the government took it and put it toward the student loans I'd tried hiding from. Karma catches you in nasty ways, I'm afraid. Fortunately, my little silkie is always there to console me! Lol.

So Benedict, my rooster, seems to be picking on Chewbacca (my silkie). She's about the size of his leg, and he's been spending a lot of time jumping on her and pinning her down, sometimes grabbing her head feathers with his beak. Is this typical rooster behavior to females? I haven't noticed him doing it to the others, but she's the only girl who's completely mature (the others are only just beginning to lay). She's also my only bantam-- I didn't plan it that way, but the other silkie I had died a few months back. Is he just "practicing" with her? Is this an indicator that he'll become more aggressive? I've been feeling bad for my little girl. She hides in the corner from him, tucked between her old nest box (one of those ones that you buy at the store, but she uses it as a roost now) and the wall.
