Well, I took a plunge! Chewbacca (my silkie) went broody again. This time, I ordered some silkie hatching eggs a few days ago, and they should be arriving today! Assuming all goes according to plan, I'll have my first round of chicks before long! Should I provide the chicks with their own waterer? And what can I do to keep the other chickens out of it? Same with their food. Or should I try to build a completely separate enclosure for Chewie and her brood? I could probably find a sort of doghouse and put up fencing around it, but if I don't need to, I'd rather not.

I hope to get some show-quality birds out of this clutch... I'd love to try and get into the showing world. I had a beautiful silkie I was going to try showing when she got older, but I lost her this winter. :( But these silkie eggs come from good lines, so I'm hopeful! If all ends well, I may even try to get into the breeding world... but we'll see!

I'll end with a pic of Benedict looking as handsome as he can.

Sadly, Bart passed away last night. He seemed to have a seizure and then was gone. I've had chickens die before, all quickly. This time seems extra hard with it being drawn out. I really liked that bird. At least he isn't suffering any longer. Thanks for all the support.

so sorry :(

One of my meat birds is sick. One wing stuck out to the side. It hasn't gotten up since yesterday. I'm thinking I should cull. almost cooked the pullet chicks last night. Control sticking on the lamp regulator, so the temp was up and down, maxing out at 110 degrees. Chicks were in Rubbermaid brooder, so they had no escape... all the more reason to use a huge brooder, where chicks have plenty of room to self regulate. It's been one problem after an other with these babies.

Came home to 7 year old still running high fever, and coughing her head off. So, there'll be no work for me tomorrow! Just as well, as the stress of sick child and managing hatchlings is a bit much. Haven't had a good nights sleep since last Thursday.

still sick :( poor kiddo and mama!!!

Well....still staring into the incubator. ..nothing yet...well other than some really standing up on pointy end...had friends come over expecting to see chicks...nothing. ..but now we are going in on piglets together lol!!!! We will do chickens and they will do the piglets. Works for me as my kids would never eat again!!! Every time we have chicken for dinner they go out and count the chickens! !! Lol...

Ohhh...found a new nest of seven eggs when the friends were over checking out the coop tonight. A nest under the nesting boxes that wasn't there yesterday. ..good grief here we go again...but will have to go into the coop to get them vs the nesting boxes. Crazy half broody uncommitted girls!
