Q.T.: Eggs standing on end... that's a good sign, kind of like when we see a pregnant Mama, and her baby "drops". The baby has gotten into position for the big event.

Chicken girl: My "angel wing" died within the last hour. This is disconcerting. Do you know what causes "angel wing"?

Anya: I'm sorry that you lost Bart. It's hard to loose them. Especially to a predator.

I've lost 3 in the last 2 days. All have been moved down to the big box in the tractor, in the garage, so hopefully, temp spikes won't be problematic in the future, as they will have room to spread out a bit. And, within the next day or so, the temp can go down to 85. Hopefully, I can step down to a 100W bulb. I just hope that the cause of the 3 deaths is not contagious. I've never had such difficulty with chickens before.

Where do you find rose comb leghorns... I think I would be interested..

No more losses, and all the chicks look good, even the remaining 3 Doms. they're hopping all over the place, making great sport of jumping over each other. If you folks want a bird that will brighten up your egg baskets, is feed thrifty, an excellent forager, winter hardy, and that will be about as good at predator evasion as possible... look no further than the Rose Comb Brown Leghorn. They lay a large white egg, and are an absolute hoot to watch.

7 y.o. has strep. I don't expect much rest for a few days.

Where do I find Rose Comb Leghorn... They sound interesting !!!

Sorry for your losses too! Oh, it's supposed to be near 60 today! How exciting. Finally the birds have an area in the yard where they can dust bathe again! My driveway is seriously a small pond now from the melting giant snow banks.

QT - any news?  I woke up wondering - haha!  Too much chicken on the brain here.  :)

Sorry for the losses anya and LG.  Never easy.
nothing yet...but I am pretty sure my DD wrote down the wrong day as I remember saying Thursday. ..so fingers crossed...of course I am at work not knowing! !! Wish I set up a webcam!!! Lol

Guess it is Spring.... the predators are out and hungry. One of my hens just didn't come in (from the pen to the coop) the other evening. We didn't hear a rucus or find any feathers or blood. She was just gone. The blue and black roos are being much more aggressive than usual (esp the black
cockerel who, at 11 months old, is bigger than the two older roos). The splash (Isbar) roo is usually a gentleman.

Hoping my Cochin/Wyandotte, blue laced hen will return to laying soon. She laid an egg nearly every day from POL 10/12 till 2/14,(so I guess she has earned a good rest.) I do miss her big brown eggs, tho. I checked her out today and she has easily three finger widths between her pelvic bones, has good weight and her new feathers are coming in well. Her comb is still a little paler than usual, tho.

Most of my girls lay blue or green now (except the bantam Wyandottes, who lay a cute little brown egg). Looking to get a couple of brown egg layers (maybe Marans, Buckeye or Wyandotte) and perhaps a brown RC Leghorn for some decent size white eggs. (My tiny Spangled Hampberg hen lays a (surprisingly) large egg but the larger one lays a smallish medium white egg.) It is fun to have a "rainbow" in the egg basket!
