Id try Blue Seal Feed & Seed. They are pretty common. Are you traveling to Bar Harbor? If so there is a great little Blue Seal in Ellsworth on High St (1A). They have odd hours like 4am-2/3pm Mon-Fri. I know they sell chicks but it's seasonal not sure about eggs, but worth calling before showing up.

This is a random question but can you being hatching eggs through customs?

I believe I have yard work ADD. I get out in the yard planning to do one job and end up finding ten other

I sometimes want to give all my chickens away! Yesterday, I planted a bed of pansies and of course they all wanted to run in and tear it up. Then the little B*&^@rds decided to cross the road. Thankfully our road is not that busy, but one person did honk at them. This morning nonstop crowing! Ahhh, chickens! I really do like their eggs though, and sometimes they are so cute. I really should fence them in......

Hi I'm CoopChick I too suffer from Yardwork ADD! ;)

My girls found their way to the front of the house & then went to the neighbors lawn. As I was herding them back, 1 freaked out & started running up the road. I had to stop a car to go pick her up once she squatted for me... in the middle of the road!

And thats how I came up with the name THE BIRDS OF ANARCHY for my flock! Seriously, they are a roving posse of lawless thugs.
(paying hommage to "Sons of Anarchy", a show about an outlaw biker gang)

Lawless thugs...TOO FUNNY!!!

Hey Mainers, did you know that Hannafords, saves bread and produce they can't sell, for farmers to pick up for their livestock. I regularly go in and walk out with a huge trash bag full of amazing produce. It's perfect in the winter when free ranging is minimal and there are no greens in sight. Cabbage, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, fruit you name it- and the birds LOVE it!

I did not know that!!! Always wanted to ask but had heard, they only give to bigger farms. Headed down tomorrow!

Thanks for the info, BOA ! You can bring them through Customs but there is a fair amount of paperwork to complete prior to doing so :)

@CoopChick719.I've never had any issues getting them, nor have I ever heard anyone having a problem getting them from my local stores. But a Mainer posted here a few posts back that she was denied in her store.

Goodluck with yours!

I haven't posted in a bit. So, hello again! I just learned of the salmonella outbreak that was linked to TSC from My Healthy Hatcheries. We got our girls from TSC this year in Dover. I called them and they did confirm they were from Mt. Healthy. I'm just beside myself. The girls seem fine but from what I have read they may not be symptomatic right away. I have an auto-immune disorder and can't put myself at risk. I'm just beyond devastated. This was our first flock and I've been waiting since I was a tiny girl for this. We don't want to cull them all but.. I'm not sure what other options we have. I suppose I needed a little venting. Hopefully someone can give me insight or just a shoulder. Thanks. :)

I talked to a Mt Healthy rep earlier this spring. What he said, you can take from where it comes. I have no idea if his response was legit or not. But, he said, chickens naturally carry salmonella in their guts. So, birds testing positive is not a big issue... per the rep. Also, Mt. Healthy has had this issue reported before. An other question that needs to be asked and most likely will never be answered is: Is Mt. Healthy simply being reported because they've been caught in the past, and are now under the fire... or is Salmonella much more common in hatchery chicks from lots of companies, but they are slipping by undetected? Now, If I were you, I'd take his statement with a huge grain of salt, given your immuno-compromised status. You might want to talk to your Dr about the situation. It could be that if you exercise normal precautions, such as washing your hands well when handling your chickens, it won't be an issue. After all, we're all exposed to lots of bacteria every day, including the staph that lives on our skin. Or, you could talk to your local vet, and find out how salmonella is normally expressed in avians. Does it show up in the feces? Or elsewhere? Can your birds be tested? Above all else, do what is necessary to take precautions which are reasonable for your situation.

Watt Poultry USA is a free magazine geared for the commercial industry but the April 2014 issue focused on Salmonella. It is worth checking out. www.wattpoultryusa-digital.com. I get the printed copy but it is interesting to see that perspective. and know what is going on. I believe over time the chicks outgrow salmonella just like people do.

I'm sorry to hear this. I wouldn't panic yet (easier said than done, I know!). Like LG said, talk with your doctor to see what she/he says. Maybe using disposable gloves, keeping hand sanitizer readily available and wearing a mask when cleaning the coop (salmonella isn't airborne, but other disease from chickens are) would be enough to mitigate the risk. Do you have someone who can do the majority of the hands-on work in the coop for you? Don't despair just yet!
