Maine

Glad my mixed flock could help you identify your bird.

I haven't had an accident yet with my big roos and this girl or my banty, although it's painful for me to watch the actual deed.

I thought the phoenix was a banty too, at first, but she's a bit bigger than my real banty, although considerably smaller than my white leghorns. She's absolutely stunning, I wish she'd come out more often. She's a master at sneaking back into the coop after I throw her off the roost. I used to throw her outside the run and it would sometimes take her awhile to figure out how to get back in... but too many predators right now to do that.

We got our 6 new birds today! 3 Ameraucanas, 1 Barnevelder, 1 Golden Cuckoo Marans, and 1 extremely flighty, wild, crazy Ancona. None of them are quite at the point of lay, but it shouldn't be too long.
I only got 2 eggs from the other 21 girls today, which has become the standard amount of late. I'm hoping these new girls will pitch in soon.

congrats and maybe they will encourage to old gals to get with it. (mine did for a short while now they are all back to not laying unless it's a silkie. that's the only birds I have laying with consistancy

got 8 new brown egg layers last friday and monday night. i got golden comets that are 7 months old they lay nice dark brown eggs. bought them off of uncle henrys and craigslist. i am all set for winter egg laying i have 9 white leghorns and now 9 golden comets all the same age. and 4 easter eggers that are the older bunch. im up to 22 hens and 2 roosters. oh and 1 broody sitting on 7 eggs due to hatch december 11th.

Hoppy- do silkies get along well in a mixed flock? I've never really considered them. It seems like they would get beat up by a Barred Rock (or a wild, flighty, crazy-acting Ancona).

blueseal- I found mine on Craigslist also. I think the Comets and the leghorns are the way to go if you want winter eggs. My leghorn is the only older bird laying right now. The other leghorn is molting, but I noticed the other one didn't take much time off for the molt. We have a couple of olive-egger pullets who contribute to our 2-egg-a-day harvest.

Mine problem is that I am fixated on getting as many different color eggs as I can, so I keep trying more and more breeds, some of which are not very productive. I'm up to 27 hens and 1 rooster.

The eggs are definitely pretty (although I won't have true blue for a little while), but most of the eggs are still hiding inside the chickens! Right now, each dozen is made up of white, really dark brown, and a weird greenish-brownish coffee color. The normal brown layers and all the Easter-eggers are still on vacation.

That's the way I am. Right now I am getting white, tan, brown, dark brown, blue, and even small pink-ish eggs from my banty.

if they get along kind of depends on the birds. some (ok alot) of silkies are not very active mostly because they don't see well with all the puffs but if you keep their heads trimmed, they get along better (ie less picked upon) and best if they all grow up together (or silkies being older of the chicks). silkie are also ground dwellers so they need a group on the ground to snuggle up to in the winter as they don't perch well (eyesite again and wings that don't fly) also because some dont have full skulls, a peck on the head can mean death which is why them being the older chicks makes head pecking less likely to happen but it does.

I can't believe that my bantam cochins and d'Uccles are still laying.

I've turned off the incubators since I have enough chicks hatched as of two weeks ago.

If anyone wants some hatching eggs for free, let me know
