Weasel was back today. DH saw it outside the coop chasing a screaming rat, - this was after it had already killed 2 1/2 more hens. The injured hen will need to be put down tomorrow, I think. They don't seem to be interested in the trap in the coop, but I think the weasel only comes in while in the process of a high-speed chase after a rat. I'm not sure where I should put the trap outside, but maybe I will try various places this weekend.

We have two traps. A snap trap in a box baited with chicken meat, and a small live trap. The live trap was triggered the other day, meat gone, but nothing inside. DH thinks the small gaps on the side could allow something to get out (this is an ancient trap we inherited), or it is possible a chicken tried to reach for the bait and grabbed it (the opening is maybe 5" square).

If anyone is looking for hatching eggs, I have some pure Speckled Sussex $15/dozen and heavy layer mix for $8.

All eggs are candled for shells, properly stored, and laid in a greenhouse so they're never frosted.

Just got back from Tractor Supply and bought 6 Australorps to go with my 8 EE's. I want to breed in the dark legs with small combs. Either way next year when I hatch some eggs I should wind up with some Olive eggers. Glad I finally got a decent flock after almost 25 years without. I do want a few GUinea's and maybe a couple of ducks but rather buy those locally instead of from breeders. Anyone around here with Guineas or Ducks? IF so if I wind up with a lot of roosters maybe could trade with anyone interested.

Quote: You get the guinea eggs to me, and I'll stick them in my bator, simply for the hatching experience. It would have to be after 4/21. Most likely wouldn't want to keep any, but... you never know! I'd also love to hatch some Campbell eggs.

I'll try to remember to post when they start laying. Please remind me after 04.21 when you're ready to incubate.

Sorry you're being weaseled, Bucka.  They're evil creatures.  And they move so fast, they'd be practically impossible to shoot.

Our farmer friend lent us some live traps today. The ground hog-size one was frozen to the ground, so we got one that would fit a raccoon, and the other looks like it would fit a bear! :D.
We haven't had a chance to set them out yet. I might get some canned catfood for bait, but if the weasel kills anymore chickens, we plan to toss the whole bird in there and see if he will come back. We put fox urine around, for whatever that is worth.

It has been a real drag dealing with the weasel, but we made almost 7 years before we had a predator attack, so I guess our time has come. At least the weasel has the rats on the run. I just hope we can catch him before he decimates the whole flock.
