Johnny's is an employee-owned company, so while they might do business with Monsanto, they are not a subsidiary. They have great stuff. Are you aware of Fedco seeds? They are a cooperative (also local) and have joined the lawsuit against Monsanto. Their prices are good (cheap) and the catalog is extremely entertaining, with politics (including seed politics) and great drawings, but no glossy photos. I love the occasional silly poem which accompanies the seed description, i.e., "Wrinkled Crinkled Crumpled Cress" says: Salad green that will impress. Mix some lettuce, add some dress. Stir it up, sit down and fress. Banish cares and summer stress. How can you resist buying that? They also have a division for trees, tubers, and organic grower's supplies (which can be picked up in Clinton, if you don't want to pay shipping on heavy bags of manure or whatever), and also an annual tree sale at the warehouse in Clinton. Anyway, you should order their catalog too, even if just for entertainment value.

I had heard of Fedco but never actually knew where to buy it. I don't get out often and I hate to admit it but I still get lost in Disgusta. I've lived here since 2008. I also don't watch TV so I don't get advertising and rely pretty much on word of mouth. So thank you both - the catalog sounds great, I'll get that one too although I have no room this year for more plants.

I think I may have seen a fedco commerical just once my entire 30 yrs in maine, they mostly use the newspaper for their annual warehouse sale (prices are the same as the catalog prices but yo can pick up which generally is not allowed). johnny's I will say is expensive, but the catalog is great and if you love tomatos, they have one of the best selections. also if you can visit the store in the spring, they have someone that normally is set up in the parking lot selling seedlings grown from johnny's seeds. if you have some seed in mind you really want, popular items have sold out in dec so order as early as you can.

I can relate. I get lost inside stores!
I don't even own a TV, but I'm quite sure you will not hear about Fedco there!

welcome to maine
Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to say hello. We are new arrivals in Maine. We moved from Massachusetts in September and are loving it. I'm looking forward to adding RC Anconas this year. I'm waiting for Yellow House Farm to post their availability. We also have penciled runners and a pair of dewlap Toulouse coming from Holderread in May. I would love to find a broody anything when the time comes to lessen my load! It's been fun reading all the posts.

Thanks guys! Do they have to be purebreds to enter? What does the judging look for/at? Can you just take your duck to the fair and set up for judging or do you have to contact someone ahead of time about entering? (I know it's still a ways away. But I would love to give it a try this year!)

yes, they need to be purebreds and they are all judged on a breed standard (you can contact the national breed club for a standard or you might even find it online. they also need to be tested prior to the show (some shows will test that day but most do not) some you have to pre enter, some fun shows you can enter the day of the show (farminton has a basket show where you enter that day- it's a fun show meaning both fun and just for fun- no points but they do give prizes). all of the fairs need to be pre entered as does the central maine show. I'd advise since you have not been in ducks that long, come watch the show in windsor on may 27th, it's free to the public to get in and watch. we also have tail gate sales for members and exhibitors so you can find some nice birds there as well.

Whoa! I haven't been that involved in hatching (yet), but that sounds like a steal! I think SCG could use that unit! ;)

OH that has turned into a dream of mine! I just started with ducks last year. Hatched two, bought two now 18 are due to hatch mid-march. I'm really getting into this! I would LOVE to run (or atleast work in) an East coast "Metzer Farms". If the hubby would allow it and sales were profitable (or atleast break-even!) I would be in heaven building an small hatchery here in Maine. I can see it now! An incubation room, a nursery/brooder room, an office area, a sales and shipping room.....Ohhhhh, dare to dream! lol.
