Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to say hello. We are new arrivals in Maine. We moved from Massachusetts in September and are loving it. I'm looking forward to adding RC Anconas this year. I'm waiting for Yellow House Farm to post their availability. We also have penciled runners and a pair of dewlap Toulouse coming from Holderread in May. I would love to find a broody anything when the time comes to lessen my load! It's been fun reading all the posts.

Welcome kristen2678! What part of Massachusetts are you from? (I grew up in Natick). Hoppy, - I also use the Johnny's catalog a lot. The seeds are a little pricey, but I do buy certain varieties I can't get elsewhere, like the Islander peppers. But the catalog is great, lots of planting information and great photos!

those are pretty ducks, what are they?

Left to right: "Lucky" - Male - Rouen, "Moo-Shu" - Male - Khaki, "Yenko" - Female - Khaki, "Ming-Ming" - Female - Khaki. We lost Ming-Ming last Fall to a fox.

My two males were too rough on poor Yenko I had to go and get a couple more females to cut her some slack.

This is one of the new girls: Oreo, She's a Magpie...

And this one ^^ is Delilah, a White and Fawn.)

Keep in mind I've only been at this duck stuff for a year before I ask this question..lol!....
Is there anywhere in Maine that does Duck Shows (I think that's what you'd call it)? I would love to go see one and see what it's all about.

there are ducks shown at most of the fairs as well that the central maine bird fanciers have ducks shown at their may 27th show and the fall show in oct.

Central Maine Bird Fanciers is THE club, having two exclusively poultry shows a year at the Windsor Fairgrounds. Plenty of ducks at last Falls show.

Other poultry shows are at the Agricultural Fairs around the state.

To enter birds in Maine shows, you must have a certificate to present, proving your birds have been tested by a state certified tester.

Thanks guys! Do they have to be purebreds to enter? What does the judging look for/at? Can you just take your duck to the fair and set up for judging or do you have to contact someone ahead of time about entering? (I know it's still a ways away. But I would love to give it a try this year!)

my planting help I get from the johnny's selected seed catolog (it's online too)
it tells you all that info based on maine.

scroll down and click on the growing info.
or better yet, get one of their catologs, great for info on planting, storage, diseases and pest.
and they are local so you know it's maine based info, right where you are. (do I sound like a commerical for them- yes I used to work for johnny's)

Thank you, that's very helpful. I've ordered their catalog. Didn't realize they were local... will use them next year as long as they're not Monsanto related.
