Maine

I'm on a health kick, lost 13#, down from a size 12 jeans to a 6 and this morning I ran 1 3/4 miles. just 15 months ago, i could not climb 5 steps without being out of breath. (not because I was overwt but because I have blood issues) , I think I'm back!
today going to make mozzarella cheese for the first time, wish me luck.

My "Marans" did the same thing. When she's not broody (which she seems to always be) she lays a light brown egg.

Oh well.

she could be a marans. as the lay cycle goes on, the eggs get lighter, so if she is older, they could be lighter. the hatchery cuckoo marans generally don't have what is considered good egg color.
love the geese names.
I bought just one bird at the swap, it is supposed to be a cuckoo marans, which I was told was supposed to lay a dark egg, the guy said he thought she was not laying yet but the rest of the hens had started to. She is laying for sure, cause I have her in quarantine and she has a regular brown egg. OH, well, another laying hen in the flock. You live, you learn then you read up on things, LOL.
I also picked up my pair of geese yesterday, embdens. I think they will be Gertie and Grumpy.

Mozzarella is easy and a hoot to make, I love pulling and stretching it.

GEESE! Congrats. You know we need pictures, right?

Hoppy's right ... most marans lay really dark at the beginning of the cycle and it gets lighter as they continue to lay. I have a non-hatchery marans that laid almost black eggs when she first started out and now they're more of a dark purply-brown. They look nice in my egg carton, but they're not super-special by any means. I'm a bit disappointed.

If you are going to resell her, I would like to buy her, I would like a marans in my flock, I sold a few to ^^^^ In chesterville! But I do miss them, I do not care about the egg color, but I love the look of them, And I need some more larger birds, because my poor pancake (buff orpington) is the only large one I have left the left are silver spangled hamburgs, silver pheonix's, and an ancona!!! Please let me know or PM me I am sure we could work something out!

I have 6 pullets I am trying to sell. They are almost 9 months old and laying. I hatched them and raised them. They are not purebreds. I would call them a golden sexlink. I am looking for $12 each or all 6 for $60.

I guess I didn't know that Marans eggs got lighter all the time. I thought after a long break, like a molt, they got darker again. That would explain while my Welsummers no longer lay those gorgeous eggs, after taking the winter off. I have 2 very dark layers now. One looks like a Marans, but came in an olive egger assortment I bought. The other is a Cuckoo Marans, - one of the pullets I bought from the person in Lubec. Those cuckoo eggs make the long trip seem worthwhile!
