Glad I got on top of the Icelandics 'list' when I did. Polly, just think how pretty they'll be with the rest of my eclectic flock! The coloring on their fuzzy heads is interesting. Maran eggs due for hatching next weekend!!!

Well, it's been a long time since I've been on the forum, but real life got in the way, hah. Now I'm back, and now that the snow has melted, I'm busily counting my money and hoping I can afford to build a coop! Because I still live at my mom's, and the fact that the only way I can get chickens is to keep them in a run and not free-range, I'm trying to learn more about runs. How much space per chicken should there be in a run?

Also, is there anyone out there willing to teach me how to slaughter chickens? I vaguely remember someone here offering to teach me when it was slaughtering time, but I can't remember who it was. I have a feeling my vegetarianism won't last much longer, especially if I eventually start raising broiler chicks.

One of the people offering was me. We're still deciding whether we're going to do it tomorrow or next Saturday. I'll post as soon as I know. We don't want a huge audience, but one or two additional people won't be a problem.

I'm in Vassalboro, by the school.

That would be awesome! I have an appointment tomorrow at noon, so let me know! I'd like to see how it's done, maybe help if I can. Hands-on experience is better than reading how-tos online.

Hands on is recommended. And practice. I just slaughtered a roo recently and did a poor job. The J cut is all I find to require "finesse." Goodluck.

I feel like such a freak. I had someone call about my hens I placed on craigslist. told them they were sold but I have 3 other hens. they wanted to come by my house and see what else I had, but dh explained we don't allow that. so they say they want the 3 hens....here is where I become the freak ....
my 11 year old son was a little upset we were getting rid of these as 1 is his pet, which I was unaware of...his brother told me that is the one he holds all the time. We boxed them up and he was a little sad but ok. we got to the meeting spot and he had a crate in the back of a pickup. Told dh I wasn't liking that and dh asked if that was where they were going. He said "yeah, they're just chickens"which instantly made me angry. I was already feeling bad for my son and this just made me say " sorry, changed my mind". I understand him being angry since he drove there , but the sticking 3 hens in the back of a pickup truck for 45 minutes on the highway just didn't seem right either... I am such a freak :/

Nice photos ashandvine.
Polly C, where did you get your Icelandics? I want some too! :)

I got the hatching eggs from Luvmygoats in Lubec. I think they are going to be awesome in my pen. I have been wanting some for a while now. So far of the 10 that made it to lockdown these are the only ones that have hatched. I am giving it a few more days.

I wondered where you were, I hope you feel better.
I can empathize Widget, I was going to the swap yesterday, then to help set up for the CMBF show in Windsor, and back out today for the show, and instead I have been sick all weekend. It was not the way I was planning on spending my long weekend.
