Maine

Well, of course you can! If you want to...Do you have a broody hen, or are you planning to raise the chicks yourself? Usually it's uncommon for the girls to have that motherly instinct come fall, but have seen it happen. Have a neighbor who STRICTLY free ranges, his girls will disappear for a while, and then walk out of the woods with a brood. He did have one last winter in an isolated part of the barn with a dozen under her. So it does happen for sure. It just scares me to have little ones outside in winter, their chance of survival is much less. It's fun to have the babies inside for a while, but eventually they have to go out, and it's tough on them not being acclimated in winter. Anyway, if you decide to brood indoors, have a great time with it, and if you have kids, they will love it. Watch out for your kitty if you have one. Little chicks look a lot like mice to them LOL!

I bought this big black wyandotte roo and had him brought to maine from VA. something took him on the one day I let them out of the run for just a few hours, grrrrr. I guess i can be thankful I have some chicks from him but god that was an expensive chicken dinner!

So my free range flock is going to not be so free range anymore- our other neighbor came over to express his dislike for them showing up on his lawn- I had no idea they were even going over there- there is a nice thick treeline between the properties... He says he is wanting to put his house on the market, and does not want perspective buyers to think they will be "invaded" by chickens ( his exact words) I wanted to say "FINE, NO EGGS FOR YOU" but agreed to keep them in their run unless we were home. I felt bad leaving for work today- they were all standing by the run door looking very sadly at me...!

Oh that stinks Kelly! We don't let ours free range either, but that's because the neighbor has a dog that's a chicken killer.

And Hoppy, that is just awful!! :(

Got our last 4 chickens on Tuesday! I'm still hoping to find some splash Orps eventually, but for now the flock is complete. :D Newest ones are easter eggers and a barred rock easter egger cross. So cute! Fingers crossed they're all pullets!! So now we have Snowball (light Brahma), Fluffy (blue Silkie), Straw and Berry (Amberlinks), Daisy and Lily (Red Sexlinks), Buttercup and Spartacus (Buff Orps), and the four EEs. Tigerlily, Bluebell, Blackberry and Clucksy. Had to stick with the "nature" theme. lol Clucksy is K's special chicken, he got to pick her out himself. Tigerlily is my favorite of the new girls, so friendly!

FINALLY got the pen up and ready! It will still need to be expanded, but it's a start until we get more $$. The girls are loving being able to go outside, of course!! Once we get the rest of the panels, we'll be expanding it, adding hardware cloth along the bottom and putting the pop-door in the coop. Need to hurry up and get the nest boxes in too!!

Straw and Berry, I can never tell them apart! Supposed to be Amberlinks, but they've yet to develop any of those spots I've seen...??? 4 months old now, I think.

Fluffy, the silkie we got from Hoppy. Took her the longest time to decide to venture out of the coop!

Maybe you can get some kind of cheap fencing to attach to the run. It would keep them contained, but give them access to some greens. We have non-electrified electric fencing connected to the run, which we move every month or two over two general locations. We plant grass seed on the empty half. They are only out there when we are home, for the most part.

I'm thinking of trying something like snow fence with fiberglass poles for my other flock. The wire fence is 4 feet tall, and only one hen flies over it.

Snowball has this perpetual grumpy face, it is hilarious. She's 9 months old now, giving us 6 eggs a week. Can't complain about that!

Hoppy, Fluffy is a funny little girl! And she has the most distinctive voice, you can always tell when it's her talking. Do all silkies have that sound, or is she just unique?

And Clucksy is so crazy looking, I love it! Barred and all, but with a beard/muff/whatever too! Will be interesting to see what color she winds up laying, I'm assuming brown? She was the most "pullet looking" of the barred crosses she had there, so really hoping she is indeed a pullet! We've already got Spartacus, one boy is my limit!

Lady we got them from said Tigerlily may lay olive, can't wait to see!

she's unique, my silkies rarely make any noise except the boys when they crow.
