So sad to hear about your shepherd Gala. Difficult to lose a friend after twelve years, but must have been some wonderful experiences for both of you along the way.

So nice to hear a happy ending for Lillian, glad she found a new home, and that was probably the answer. She was dominant in one flock, but when she went to another and had to face other dominants, she has backed down, and will find her place. Who says chickens don't have personality?

Actually Lillian wasn't my dominant hen, she terrified my girls though. One day she just started causing injury to others, and my dominant who is my smallest couldn't stop her. My dominant gives orders loudly and the girls respect her. It was one of those things that happened over night, one day she was really sweet, the next day a bully. Clover Run has more hens and bigger hens than i do, we're hoping she comes around.

condition your chicken can mean, feed them so they are well muscled and not thin, or to condition them to the cage, is to get them used to being in the small show cage so they stand up and show themselves off rather then laying down like some bird so in a small cage.
either way, both take time.

Okay, seriously... question: what does it mean to "condition" your chicken? I know it isn't printed between "rinse and repeat" because I've looked there.

hey everyone! Long time, no see!

I feel like I have missed out on a ton of stuff, but things got crazy here pretty fast

I swear I had kids going in every direction for a little while there- they were traveling to see family out of state, go on summer trips with friends, our family camping trip....it was nuts! unfortunately it all ended on a sour note when we lost our 12 year old shepherd, Gala, last weekend (not like yesterday last weekend, the one before) and I decreed enough was enough and everyone had better stop moving for a few days. Gala was my baby, I had her longer than most of my kids and my husband and she and I had been through an awful lot together. There were many dark and lonely nights that I didnt think I would make it through, but she sat with me through them....But she went peacefully and surrounded by love, so I couldnt ask for anything more for her.

And now I am back and life has a funny way of moving forward.

I have slimmed my flock down to a mere 24 birds. 4 of which are roosters....and only 1 of the other 20 has deemed us worthy of eggs so far! I want to worm them, but dont want to by enough wormer for a million and 4 birds, which seems to be the only quantity in which you can buy it. I was wondering if anyone here was interested in splitting an order with me? We could probably even do more than 2 of us and still have enough for multiple doses really. Feel free to shoot me a pm if you are interested!

Oh Yeah! And Widget, if you still have that tank and want to get rid of it, I have a lizard that I am sure would love an upgrade

First I'm so sorry for the loss of Gala. Dogs have the unique way of wiggling into our hearts even though we know the relationship will never be as long as we would like. Yet we still enter into it without hesitation.

Second. Yes I still have the tank. It is buried in the horse trailer right at the moment. I have the rest of the week off and organizing all the stuff I just retrieved is the priority. I'd take $40 for the set. Tank, stand (with door) and hood. Trim and stand are a light oak color. The hood wouldn't be great for a lizard but the light comes off so it could work as a strip light on top of a screen cover.

Lillian is doing great - has fell right in line and even making a friend or two.

So today my chickens are are 16 and 18 weeks old...and let me tell you what, I am sooooo anxious for eggs! Does anyone have any ideas when I might be able to expect to find them? I've got easter eggers, barred rocks, white rocks and buff orpingtons.....

Also- I have put up about 200 feet of fencing in the treeline between us and our neighbors house- and it was doing the job until yesterday when some of them got around it and couldn't figure out how to get back! looks like I'll be buying 50-100 more feet. There are times when I think these chickens are genius' and times when I think the exact opposite...!

figure another 4 weeks and by then you should have some eggs. my neighbor called to ask if i was missing a chicken, not me, but the neighbor to the other side of me probably was. I've seen his in my driveway several times but this was 1/4 mile from his house. maybe it got chased over there by mr fox.
