Maine

Took a drive to the Windsor Fair earlier today. Wanted to check out the Poultry Barn and Bunny Barn. Hoppy was busy working away! Thank you Hoppy for taking the time to talk chicken with me!

If anyone knows of any, I am looking for: Show Quality Black Silkie Roo and Show Quality White Silkie pullets/young hens.

Just spent the past fifteen minutes watching a fox try to get at the ducks and chickens. I thought about chasing it off but I know that it would have come right back as soon as I went in the house. That and I needed to see if it could get into the pen. It didn't. And the Golden Comet pullet was having no part of the whole "Come to dinner" invitation. She watched the fox like a hawk and stood nose to beak with it and was ready to fight. Good thing the fence was there. I'm sure the fox will be back but round 1 goes to the chickens.

Oddly enough the Muscovy drake was about ten feet away in the goat pen. The fence there is just a sheep panel so the fox could have easily gone in. But the duck is larger than the fox and the two goats would not have been too welcoming. The little dwarf goat kept her eye on the fox so I think she would have butted him if he had dared enter her domain.

I did get some pictures but I don't have a great photo program to enlarge them.

Download picasa - it is free and a great photo program - have been using it for years and they have yearly updates - it is now picasa 3
I would love to see some pics of that encounter. I would have been stressed watching it live.

Fox is on the right sitting next to the red fence.

Fox is on the left next to the crate. The Golden Comet is on the right watching.

Wow. Good photos.
Our fox hasn't been seen again. He never came into the yard, that we know of, but I'm remaining watchful.

We are overrun with skunks this year. I saw a family of 5 in broad daylight. About every 3 nights, we hear a loud squealing noise in the woods, and jump up to close the window. The smell is always gone in the morning, and we think an owl is picking them off, one by one. Last night, it happened very close to the house.

We are overrun with cantaloupe, too, which has been much more pleasant!

Everywhere I go, see dead skunks on the road. We've had 2 fairly mild winters, so every wild creature is overpopulating. Supposed to be a hard winter this year, so hopefully nature will take care of things.

For everyone having a problem with wildlife, bugs, fleas, lice, mites, etc. etc., check out this website

stephentveden.com

He has tons of natural solutions to deter pests, including skunks, for which he recommends HOT pepper, sprinkled around the area. Also hot pepper will deter fox and other critters. It's an interesting site, and of course he has something he's trying to sell, but does not push it and pushes more household products to help with just about any problem. Who woulda thunk that Listerine will kill and repel fleas??? Our dogs are getting dosed today!
