I hate the white stuff and milk is okay if nothing else is available.

Amazing how little people pay attention when driving. When I feed my horses in the afternoon I leave one in the round pen so he can eat his high fat grain and supplements without being bothered by the other two. The other two get to go out in the paddock for an hour or so. Unfortunately one of the two got out of the paddock and was grazing out by the road. Not one person stopped to let me know that Gosi was loose and there was plenty of traffic zooming by the house. I'm working on fixing the whole fence so the horses can't get out but it is slow going since I can only buy fence posts when I have a few extra dollars. And lately I haven't had a few extra dollars. I need around thirty more posts to complete the project. More would be better so I can increase the size of the enclousure but I'll settle for the thirty for now.

widget: glad your horses are safe even if no one stopped.
ashandvine- I'm sure your son will share the chickens with you. my son and I do. when he wins, he pays 1/2 the money to buy new and better stock. I always seem to be the one paying for the feed bill but I guess at this stage, that's ok.

hi guys ;;n gals;; i don't mean to break into the conversation ,but its not too often you find some local folks in the know .... i just rescued some hens that i think are past there prime .. they seem to be ignoring my nesting boxes .. do you folks know where i might get some cold tolerent laying hens this time of year ... i just would like to get a few hens to maybe spur the others into laying ... my coop is five by eight with a five stall nesting box so i'm pretty sure theres room any help would be great,, i'm real green to this chicken thing --lol-- thanks ---

you could check out any of the poultry swaps going on (click the link in my siggy for the dates and locations) and there is a poultry show coming up oct 7th at the windsor fair grounds. your hens may be taking a break, which they do. with days getting shorter, hens will start cutting back on laying and molting hens generally don't lay until they finish molting. give them some good quality feed and greens, add some light to their day if needed and hopefully they will give you some payment in return.

I know a few people who live in that area. At least one is a chicken owner too.

Well if you are looking for a couple younger birds I would suggest trying Longhorn Supply in Buxton. They are getting in some Golden Comet pullets next week that will be around three months old. They should start laying within a month after that. Price is $10 each if ordered in advance. They sell out fast at that price and the Comets are great layers. They are taking orders or once they get in you can get them for $12 a piece. Otherwise the Sanford swap is a great one to check out. There is usually a good turnout. Of course this time of year many people are just trying to get rid of roosters but you never know.

I just loaded my incubator with eggs for my next spring show birds. am I crazy or what?? I guess it did it just in time as now all my silkies think it's time to be sitting on eggs. once I see exactly how many are fertile, I'll give them the job and save the electricity but I figure no sense in them trying to cover alot of eggs when I know not all of them will be fertile.

My friend brought me back some camel milk chocolate bars from the UAE. They arrived yesterday. I have to say that normally nothing chocolate (milk anyway, boo to dark) lasts in this house long.

The date one was edible but the plain one... no thanks.

By the way, to add something chicken related, we've had a ton of hawks here. Haven't lost anyone yet, thankfully, but my fishing lines continue to be broken (and replaced).

I would love to try the camel milk bar!! THere is a family raising camels for milk down south as it is so supposed to be SO good for you. FDA won't allow them to sell it. I wish they would. Camels, llamas, all of it!

You know SCG, explaining that fishing line idea might be nice. I figure its lines of fishing 'wire' across an open area to deter the hawks. I was considering pretty streamers, like windsocks only pretty, but invisible is good. What impact does it have on the hawks? And since I didn't get the duck or the mathbox I think Widget should forfeit or have to share her dark chocolate!
