Maine

I must say, I love my chickens! The original reason was for utility, fresh eggs and eventually healthy meat. I didn't realize how FUN they would be!

Just went to let everyone out, they were all following me around like puppies, begging for scraps. Even the two roos! LOL
THey really are hilarious. We have a skunk that has been digging up our lawn on a nightly basis, and my husband went out one afternoon to see if maybe it was getting under our shed- as he is bending down with the flashlight, all 10 ladies go running over and stand behind him...like they might "help". It also cracks me up when I go sit outside and read, they typically come and sit near me- I love hearing the sounds they make too!
They beg worse than the dog too!

Does anyone have any roosters looking for a new home? We have 4 Dominiques, a chicken Mutt but she is pretty and we love her she is the nicest of our flock, and 4 new EE's. We really would like to get some fertilized eggs from our favorite mutt girl for me to hatch in my classroom (and hopefully to end up with some super sweet little ladies that are good layers like her).

you certainly have come to the right place to ask that question.
I will tell you what I have and I'm sure others will chime in as well.
I have a black amerauca and a black orpington, both hatched this year. pm me if interested.
you could also check out one of the swaps, this time of year there are lots of free roosters.

Holy Cow Yes! I have some really beautiful Ameracuna and Easter Egger Roosters, I hatched alot of roosters this year! I have been trying to find pet homes for them, some of them just too beautiful to eat! I can email you pictures, my tapatalk app is not letting me post pictures and I haven't heard back from the developer yet.

My computer didn't post my reply here. huh?
Long Horn also sold me crosses which they advertised as pure, were fairly poor about their shipment notifications, didn't have prices on most of their things I looked at, had terrible customer service, and when I pointed out that they had sold me crosses they didn't bother to fill the rest of my order/call me for it.

Okay I have to chime in here in defense of Longhorn. Also keep in mind I don't mean to offend anyone or ruffle any feathers. Yes their birds are hatchery birds. Mostly from Cackle. Now for someone like me who doesn't show and has no interest in showing I have no issues with hatchery stock. I want chickens for eggs and sometimes meat so they don't have to be perfect. I can't speak for the whole Americauna are they or aren't they issue. From experience, mostly from this forum, I know that if I really want a true Americauna then I am not going to go to a local feed store to get one but I would try to find a breeder. As far as sick birds go again I can't comment other than to say every bird I ever bought from them has been healthy and hearty. As for the store itself it is a bit disorganized and dusty but so is Metcalf's up in Cornish. I just look at it as a bit of Maine charm.

As for customer service I don't have one negative thing to say about anyone who works there. I had a line of credit since I was getting all my hay and grain delivered by them every other week for over a year. The drivers unloaded and neatly stacked everything they brought every time. If they didn't have something in stock it was delivered as soon as it came in. About a year and a half ago I fell behind in my payments and I stopped getting deliveries until I could get caught up. Keep in mind I stopped the deliveries not Longhorn. At first I thought it would take a couple months. It took me about nine months to pay it off. Not once did they harass me for the money. I would pay $20-$50 at a time when I could. On my final payment I sent a note with it thanking them for their patience and that I would understand if they never wanted me as a customer again. I received a note back saying I was more than welcome in the store and that I was still the type of customer they wanted to keep since even though I was having financial issues I made every effort to pay off my debt. They even asked if there was anything they could do to help. So for me I really like the place and have no qualms about recommending them.

I like my Easter Eggers that I ordered from Longhorn's. One turned out to be a cross-beak rooster, but I blame that on Cackle. I got two cross-beaks from Meyer hatchery, also, so Cackle isn't the only one.

I also liked that I could pick up a transport crate locally, for the same price as online, but without shipping costs. They don't sell those at Agway or Tractor Supply. It is definitely a funky atmosphere, but I agree it has some Maine charm.

So I came home tonight to a nice mess to clean up in the house. Walked in and all I saw was feathers, bird seed and the cockatiel cage tipped over and in several pieces. No idea how it happened since it is a large cage that is rather difficult to move. I cleaned up everything and put the cage back together. Then I found the one survivor on top of the African Grey's cage. His two cage mates are gone and based on the evidence they were snacks for one of the dogs.

The survivor has been chirping and whistling for them ever since. Hopefully he will be okay. No signs of injury but I'm sure he is a bit traumatized.
