Maine

Hi from Wisconsin~ Is anyone on here from Waterville Maine? My sister sent me an article from the Morning Sentinel dated September 16, 2012. Chicken Issue Returns To Waterville From the article it sounds like they may be changing the law. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about this? :)

Hi hoppy :frow My sister's address is in Albion but she lives in the country someplace around Albion. She said that she knows the person that had her picture in the newspaper.

I love your paint silkie too :D

I also know the person in the photo. She used to work in the school system. I know many people in Albion, because I taught there for 18 years. Now I teach in Waterville, which is a much shorter drive for me.

We had a fox this morning! I looked out the window just before 8, to see a fox sprinting away from the hoop coop. I'm not sure why he was sprinting away (going to tell his friends?), but he couldn't get in. Maybe he was just checking to see if I had let them out. I guess I won't be letting them out unless I am working in the garden that is close by :/ .

I moved to albion when I left waterville, so I know it well.

Buckabucka, careful of the fox, plenty of rabies around as well.

Shout out from Buxton! I have mostly cold hardy breeds but had bad problems with frost bite last winter. I asked for help and added some vents to avoid moisture build up (check my other posts). I wouldn't waste the time insulating because my vents would simply negate it. I am adding a "huddle box" for the frizzle and silkies to keep warm in!

Darn fox, if they weren't just so beautiful. Do you have a live trap or access to one? Surely where there is one fox, there are more, and the word is out amongst them. Plus once they make a kill, they'll be back for more, it is a free fox buffet after all. But you know all this already. And yes, do be careful, rabies are out there, and the fox tend to hunt during the day. Maybe scattering your free range times will help confuse them a bit, that seemed to help us, eventually they gave up, but not before they had taken about 10, that was in spring tho when they have their litters, and it was consistently every other day, at the same time, between 11AM and 1PM. We left the chickens in the pen for about a week (broke my heart) and it stopped altogether. Have seen a fox run right thru property with a big chicken in its jaws from a neighbor's place a couple miles away, but he's got well over 100 free rangers and he doesn't seem to mind too much if one or two go missing. Wish I had that attitude, but we're down to 10 right now and can't afford a loss. Trapping/hunting fox season starts Oct 15, but if you have a nuisance animal on your property, it's a different story. Hopefully we'll have a hard winter and get the population down a bit. Also, if you know a trapper, he/she would probably love to trap for you, fur prices are at an all time high.

Just a quick post as I am still running a fever... Thanks to the hardcore dedication of a fellow BYCer I now have three Favorelle babies from Uof A! I have never kept them but am excited to learn.

Also, a friend of mine bought silkies this year (she is not in BYC and a real back yard keeper) but she has not idea what to do to keep them safe and warm this winter. Never had silkies so if you would pm me with advice for her we would both appreciate that. I told her they shouldn't get wet. That's about all I know.

I think I'd like a Rooster.....

I've got my 10 ladies, and everything is dandy, they all get along, but I wonder if something is missing...

I'm not 100% on this yet, I'm like 90%. If I decide the girls need a guy, I'd like a really nice guy- I don't want to screw up the harmony that is currently happening in the backyard-

Opinions? please?
