Maine

Hey Everyone!
Brand new chicken owners in Raymond here. Seems like there are a few from our area on the boards here. Good to knew there are people close by that can answer our questions;)

Not sure where you're located, but the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens have a small coop in their Children's Garden with attached run that you can walk into that is a lovely design for a handful of birds. They may be able to tell you where they got it, how much it cost, etc.

Here's a link (if I did it correctly) to their contact information. I searched the images of their page and they don't have any specific pictures of the coop, but they're very friendly and I'm sure they'd be able to send you a picture upon request. http://www.mainegardens.org/contact-us

Good
luck...I mean, with keeping a small flock. They're addicting and it's hard NOT to add on!!

Well spring seems to have finally made it:D We have turkey eggs in the incubator, a number of broody hens, one hatching, and a couple of brooders full of store bought chicks.

Today we are planting blueberries, the next project is to reinforce the coops so our local fox will have to work harder for their meal (but hopefully will give up and go elsewhere) Last year we took some major losses because of that fox.

It's too late for this year, as school is almost out; but we have bought 2 coops to order from Lake Region Vocational High School in Raymond/Bridgton area. They are well made and will work with you on design.
I'd recommend them. they also make small sheds, playhouses and other outbuildings.

Someone replied to my ad and took my 6 adolescent male chicks!!!!!!! For the stew-pot when they are grown I'm sure, but I'm just grateful that I won't have to kill them myself. We were running out of room fast!!!

I know it has been a while since I have been able to post in this thread but I just wanted to stop by and wish all of the Maine Mommies a very Happy and Fun Mother's day.

I finally made the decision that 9 out of the 13 chickens are old enough to free range. I figured them to be about 10 weeks old, the others are a bit younger so they are still separated. My plan was to let them free range only when we are home, but by the end of the week I let them free range from early morning till they went in the coop at dusk. I could sit outside and watch them for hours. The rooster is great, he keeps a watchful eye out for the girls and herds them in when the hawks are flying low. They were following me around when I was mowing the grass the other day. The rooster is friendly with the kids and the cat, they don't get too close to our dog though. Our little yard roamer kitty, Maggie, goes in the coop and inspects it, with the chickens in it or not. The darn cat even lays on the ramp to the coop and the chicks have to climb over her.
