Maine

I am sure there are some other chicken lingo jokes to be had here but they are probably not in good taste... even if they ARE funny.

IRS man has some interesting days I am sure.

My chickens were out in the rain. Soaked little buggers. The molting ones, like those without tails, look somewhere between pathetic and hilarious. Looks like I have three SFavorelle pullets. Its still a little early to tell but they are dimorphic and so far it looks like all girls.

And for the record... posting while tired and punchy might not be the best idea in case anyone else was contemplating it. I am 85% percent better but baby has run high temps for three days. Off to the doc we go tomorrow bright and early. I am determined to be at Sunday's show. I missed all the others for car reasons so this time I just have to
What show?

First night in our new house! And the chickens have all been moved into their new coop as well. Its a little smaller than is really needed for the number of birds I have, but it will have to work for now until the hubs can build an addition for me. We brought the birds over quite uneventfully this evening after they had settled in for the night and the transition went rather smoothly. How long would you guys think I should leave them in their coop before letting them out to explore their new home? I am so excited for them to see all the new space they have!

Congrats! I would say 3 days.

As for the wing clipping, I would do one side, then wait and see. They are much more unstable with one side done and can't get in the air good. Clipping both sides makes them more steady and they may be able to figure out how to compensate. You will have to do it at least once a year, they'll molt and grow the feathers back. I don't know how my turkeys did it, but they grew the wings back after I clipped them. They were hilarious to watch trying to get out and going in a circle with one wing clipped. Now that the wing has grown back they are airborne again.

Hello from Falmouth! I am new to chickens this year but already have a flock of 40! I just love em all and find myself keeping all the roos :)
I have partnered with a friend in northern Maine and together we hope to build a beautiful flock of Salmon Faverolles. We also are working with a few other breeds for the fun of it but the Favs will be our specialty :)
Looking forward to meeting everyone!
Kim

I have at least one pullet right now but would be interested in a couple more and a roo next year.

wing clipping is every 6 months from the last molt, which is why SCG they grew back so quickly, they just molted out. so it's 6 months from then, that you will have to do it again. once they have been grounded, they may not even notice when they grow back that they can fly or they may be too heavy at that point to even try.
I hadn't thought of wing clipping - will have to try that. Probably easier than trying to run the twine lol How often do you need to clip? Monthly? The one who escaped today was an easter egger, she's pretty light. At least compared to the Brahma gal and the orpington roos!

keesmom is in MA and she has a house here in maine too. she also does salmon favorelles and there are a few entered in the show tomorrow. i just got back from setting up. huge silkie class and even larger call duck class!!! 52 call ducks and 28 silkies in the open class, 10 more in jrs.
there are pekin ducks and a sebasticol entered and I didn't notice what other bird ducks/turkeys there were but there are 12? cages set up for those. there will be a row of champions set up for both the jrs and open. getting excited. anyone coming, make sure to pick up an exhibtor list if you want to contact people later for birds. it has both the name and address/phone of all exhibitors but not what they are showing. you will need to find the bird in the show hall and then look up the owner ie: exhibitor #2 may be showing 3 different breeds of birds or pigeons.
I would be very interested to know who. PM me or post. Thanks. How many do you keep? How long have you had them?
