Hi Double-0

Sometimes a feed switch can cause your birds to eat less for a short period of time, which could cause a temporary change in production. After a little while, they should get used to it, and return to business as usual. Typically though, the change in production would happen a week or two after the switch, instead of immediately.

A couple other things that come to mind- Which layer product are you using? I am curious if it is our "Course Layer", which is more of a novelty feed, than a production based feed. I have tons of customers that love that stuff, however, it is not made to produce like our "Layer Pellets" are.

Also, could you take a peek at the "best if used by" date on the tag. Every once in a while, we find that a feed store didnt rotate product properly, and ends up selling outdated product.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions, or concerns. I am here to help!! [email protected]

Please let me know how you make out!!

-Eric

Thanks for the info Eric. I am using the layer pellets. I inquired about the course feed but no one around seems to carry it. I don't have the bag anymore to check the use by date. All feed gets dumped into rubbermaid container so I can store outside. They have been on it for 2 1/2 weeks but still aren't eating what they should be. Any chance you might be making feed without soy in the future? I am allergic to it (think epipen and anaphylactic shock) and would rather not handle it but I am having a hard time finding anything in our area. Anyway, I appreciate your input and will contact you by PM or email with any other questions

Clearly I am missing out on so much here!! There are so many people in my area (Raymond)! We are loving our 4 hens and 1 rooster, we've had them for about 3 weeks now and I can't believe all there is to learn and do out there!! My kids are really into helping out with the chicken, especially my 9 year old. What are these swaps everyone is talking about? What are some very basic things/tips/advice you would tell a newbie about owning chickens? I also have a small daycare and am thinking about hatching a few eggs next spring with the kids, what are your thoughts on that? I am sure I will find more questions to bombard you all with soon! Thanks!

Hi there, I just got six new chicks from mypetchicken and two of them did not make it. The chicks are for my classroo. The daycare I work at is building a beautiful chicken coop for the chicks. We hatched four eggs on our own and then purchased 6 more chicks. I need to get at least two more chicks but I don't want to have to pay the $40 in shipping again. Does anyone know where I can get them locally??? I am in Kennebunk
Thanks!

don't rely on the first page as it's not always kept up to date but right now it is acurrate.
also check craigslist. at swaps unless the chicks are over 8 weeks old, they have to sold in lots of 6, you can buy any number if you are buying direct from the farm.

Just wanted to let everyone know how great Eric at Green Mountain has been. You might have seen our convo in this thread but we PM'd and he is sending me, next day, a new bag of feed to try with the girls! How great is that? Hard to find customer service like that these days. So, thank you Eric!

Speaking of feed. My chicks were started on Blue Seal, they would hog it right down. I was at a TSC and grabbed a bag of the DuMor feed, my chicks hardly ate it. I went out and got another bag of Blue Seal and they chomped it down. I ended up mixing the 2 bags together and they ate it, not near as fast as the blue seal alone. Guess I know where I'll be buying my feed. LOL Picky little critters.
