Maine

My chickens have been in love with all the frogs hopping around the yard. I feel kinda bad for the poor things! They chase it down in a group and peck it to death, then leave it there. The ducks are loving this wet weather though.

I think my chickens are eating my rhubarb leaves. Aren't these poisonous? What gives? I've got a yard full of lush unmown dandelions! Eat those you stupid birds!

My chicks are.... how many weeks old? Hatched 3/20. 9 weeks I guess. Do I get another bag of chick starter or move on to something else? They are a mix of layer mutts.

Edit: To add something cute: It was sunny for a minute!

Honey bees love dandelions.

And with all the problems bees are having these days they can use all the help they can get. I was expecting a package of bees today and I got a call that they had arrived in Maine but were all dead.

At first the shipper was willing to ship more but then decided it was too risky. At least the bees were insured so I get my money back. But now it is too late in the year to get more bees so I have to wait until next year to repopulate my hives.

Brewer is a bit too far of a drive.

And based on the past couple of years if one doesn't order bees by the middle of January then forget it for the year. Once in a great while a package or nuc becomes available this time of year but for every one there are at least ten people who want it.

Greetings, fellow Mainers!

I'm a horse person trying to enter the glamorous world of chickendom, and this is my very first post.

The coop is almost finished, and I'm now on a quest for chickens.

After hours of painstaking research (most of it on this very Board) I've finally decided I want to start with three or four Barred Rock pullets - "the quintessential barnyard chicken," as your own Blue Eyed Ivy put it. They'll have a warm place to winter in the horse barn, and full free range privileges - complete with a most impressive manure pile.

So anyway, I'm trying to find somebody who'd like to sell a few nearly-grown birds, big enough to go right into their new coop. I'm in western Maine, near Farmington, but would be happy to drive a ways, if you guys know of anybody who sells older Plymouth Rocks.

Many thanks! I love this Board already.
