Maine

Kinda far but I know there is an Amish store in Smyrna Mills on Rte. 2 called Pioneer Place. It's not far from our camp. It's like a General Store--great stuff for inexpensive prices. In the summer they also have a vegetable stand. They also sell homemade cheese, eggs, meat and soaps. The Amish also run a metal works & shed/barn building shop up there.

Isn't there one in Unity as well?

To connect to the webinar go to https://connect.extension.iastate.edu/poultry just before 7PM (Eastern) on January 15, 2013.
it's says JUST BEFORE 7:00pm, I tried and entered as a guest but I couldn't link up but it's also not just before 7:00pm, it;s on 2:30 right now.

amish stores, they are every where. there is one in unity that I know of on rte 139/220 thorndike road and I have seen a few others around too. the one in unity has everything, bakery to furniture. I don't know what it's called but I will see if I can find out.

I tried to check out this link today because I am very interested but got no where. Could you double check it and I will try again later as well. I would love to learn about the turkeys and what not.

Amish stores??

the chickens that died, did they have any wounds, thin? anything you noticed post mortem?
I'll pm you with what I will have.

I think I forgot to answer: someone had asked about sex linked chicks red cochin?/ over barred hens. this will give you a sex linked babies. all the males will be barred and pullets will be black and as chicks the pullets will be black with dark legs and the males will be black with a light spot on the head and light colored legs.

For some reason, I have lost 8 chickens in the last 2 months and I don't know why. One day they were doing great, the next they were dead.

On another note, this year I will be looking for a Silver Laced Wyandotte, a couple of Marans, some more white egg layers and maybe another blue or green egg layer. I am hoping to bring some Barred Rock and mixed chicks to the swaps this year. I might as well make my Barred Rock/Buckeye roo earn his keep

Hoppy, what are you going to have at the swaps this year ?

Hoppy, they did look thin, but they were all wormed a couple of months ago, so I don't think that was it. There were no wounds or any other signs that I saw. I kind of baby my flock, so I'd like to think that I would notice something wrong.

My roo is a Barred Rock/Buckeye cross, so if I crossed him w/ my Barred Rock hens, they would still be sex linked right? What if I crossed him with other breeds?

That was me and thank you :)

what color is your roo? generally with barred, the males have a large white spot on the head and shanks might be darker. as they get a bit older, the males are lighter unless they only carry one copy of the barring gene and then those will be more hen colored.
in chickens, the sexlinked genes are carried by the hen. hens only carry one copy which she passes on to her sons (chickens are males ZZ and females are Zw- like humans being XY males and XX females)

in the wild, birds hide illnesses very well or they would be the first one killed by preditors. try increasing their feed (corn/scratch) and if you did not followup your worming with a 2nd treatment, you might want to re treat them just in case.

I just got more poo about my birds from SO..... so I am going to sell a few. I am not happy about it but here they are:
2 Red Dorkings pullets
2 Welsummer pullets

All are at pol or laying. I love the Wellies speckled eggs. I have birds to my neighbor who asked this fall for birds so he has first dibs but after its open season. I am going away this weekend but after that... I'll check in with anyone who pms me about them. FYI none of the four are very cuddly. They hang out with me and the kids, are good with confinement and live together currently. I find them to be quiet and sweet. 10$ ea.

Hoppy, have access to food 24 hours a day, and their feeders are filled daily. My roo BR/Buckeye roo is completely barred with 2 black tail feathers. He still eats from my hand, and he is about 8 or 9 pounds. :)

Can I get the Welsummers, PLEASE ????

i'd worm them again then and repeat in 3 weeks, also treat for mites (ivermectin pour on will treat both if you want to go that route)
the roo sounds like he carries only one copy of barring (because of the black in the tail). depending on what the hens are will determine color (somewhat)
