Maine

Well I will be putting up a new shelter for the horses this spring. So any volunteers will be welcome. Old shelter will have to come down. The paddock cleaned thoroughly and then the new one will go up. And there are about 30-40 post holes still left to be dug. Not that I would demand that anyone help in order to ride. Especially first thing in the spring when the paddock looks like a disaster area.

Widget,
Looking at your sig (i usually surf the forum on my phone so I don't get to see them), your place seems like a fun place to be with all those animals! I envy your "little farm"! Lots of hard work but worth it! Oh, I forgot to mention, I'm out on Rt 11.

I also have some bees just to make things interesting. This year I hope to get things a bit more organized. The yard needs to be tidied up and I have a few home improvement projects I would like to get done as well. I know they say that animals help with stress. I agree. Only mine seem to produce stress not alleviate it.

Wow!

The bees are easy. Especially this time of year. No maintenance needed. And they do great at foraging on their own in the summer. All I do is give them a hive to call home and try to keep them from being bothered by mites and other pests. In return they buzz around and pollinate the flowers and veggies. All in all a great pet to have.

Congrats on the job! It's always tough to find something with benefits, it's why my husband is in corporate restaurant land instead of using his fine dining chef skills...corporate floor manager gets health insurance and 401K, $200-a-plate chef gets $14 an hour and a kick in the butt.

I'm only a couple hours away from you, and while it's been ten years since I rode, they were teeny little Argentine hill ponies and I'd be totally willing to muck stalls and pitch hay afterwards, too...if you get hard up for a second warm body in the saddle, call on me!

We have bees as well. This is our second time around, our first hive died before we were able to get honey.

We got about 15 medium-sized Bell jars of honey this year! YUM!

It's crazy the difference between the tastes of honey- my dad has a hive and his honey is a lot darker and tastes more "appley" than ours.

This is my second time around as well. My first year it was a horrible summer for nectar gathering so the girls didn't have enough honey to make it through the winter. Last year was pretty good. I didn't harvest any honey though. I wanted to make sure the hive had enough food to make it through the winter. Hopefully this year they will be established enough that they can share. The last warm day they were busy doing housekeeping so I know they are still doing okay.

Believe me the boys would love the attention. And I would welcome the company. I love riding the trails alone but it is hard to ride two horses at once. The younger gelding hates to go out alone so having another horse and rider along is great for his confidence building. And the mustang could use more visits from strangers. She is quick to learn and if she figures out that strangers bring treats that will help with her training. The trails tend to be passable by May. All depends on the weather. Same goes for the paddock. Then again mud is softer to land in than packed dirt.
