Maine

Congratulations on the job, Widget!

I think horses are pretty, but you won't have to schedule me in for riding. For some reason, I've always been afraid of horses, and dogs make me kind of nervous too.

Unfortunately, I joined the Chicken Addicts support group, and they are total enablers.

I have 40 chickens, 30 imported hatching eggs arriving here soon, and my own eggs that I plan to hatch. Plus a few white layers from the feed store...

So I don't have to worry about you breaking in and robbing me then.

. Right now I have three dogs who have taken over the couch. The pit bull loves to crawl up on the couch and stretch out behind me. She usually does a great job of kicking me in the back too. Once in a while one of the cats decides to join in on the fun. Good thing I have a large couch. Knowing the horses they would try to come in the house if I let them.

I'm jealous of all your animals Widget! All I have is a cat and some fish. Hubby won't let me get a dog. *pouts* And my cat would hate me if I got another cat (he's 10 years old and has no interest in sharing me at this point!).

I can rent them out if you are interested.

I have two really cute goats who would fit right in.

Thats funny, our former neighbors kept goats and a girl I was friends with as a little girl had pet goats. I think I'll stick to visiting them at the York Zoo. Now if you had a cow to loan out, that would be a different story! ;) Love cows!!

so is any one planning on going to the swap that TSC in wilton this weekend? they certainly are starting early. I won't be there, too cold for the babies still but if anyone is looking, I have a paint silkie roo for sale.

I just had a job offer from NAPA Auto Parts working in the warehouse. Just have to pass the background check and drug test and I will once again be employed full-time with benefits. Money isn't what I was making at my other job but it is okay. And I can still work at the airport on my days off. And this means I can finally make plans for some new birds this spring.

Congrats Widget!

I think I just might have to add barred rock to my wish list. I don't know if I should get all the same breed to start or if I should have a mixed group. Thoughts? I think I'd like to start of with 3 chickens. Seems like a good, manageable number!

3 sounds nice...I'll warn you though- We thought 6 would be a good number, and within weeks decided it was not enough and had to get 4 more!!

Hey Dita & Mainechick,

I thought 3 was a good number to start with too. Agreed to take 4 from a friend, went to a swap that same weekend and got 3 more, gave away 1 rooster and now have 4 newly hatched baby chicks so that's 10. And now....thinking if my other Sizzle wants to go broody, I'll let her because I know her eggs are fertile. Who doesn't love a chick that looks like a Muppet!

I'm so excited. I candled eggs mid way through day 6, 5/6 have prominent veining, # 6 looks prominent with a dark yolk! Virgin hatcher!
Hey there Lazy G! Very exciting about your eggs!! I'm a virgin hatcher too but let my broody do all the work. The waiting IS the hardest part!

Congrats on the job! It's always tough to find something with benefits, it's why my husband is in corporate restaurant land instead of using his fine dining chef skills...corporate floor manager gets health insurance and 401K, $200-a-plate chef gets $14 an hour and a kick in the butt.

I'm only a couple hours away from you, and while it's been ten years since I rode, they were teeny little Argentine hill ponies and I'd be totally willing to muck stalls and pitch hay afterwards, too...if you get hard up for a second warm body in the saddle, call on me!

I miss horses....

Hi Echosrevenge, That is just terrible about the chef's pay!! I never knew that!

I can rent them out if you are interested.

Widget, I will not be letting my daughter see this.

She said to me, "Now that we have chickens, can we get some goats? Just little ones, Mum!"
Oh yeah...just little ones!

We have just under an acre of land. However, the way the house & garage are situated we have lots of lawn. We'd have more room if we didn't build a smaller garage to hold all the stuff that was in the bar--that had to be torn down to make room for the addition of a breezeway & bigger garage.

Widgett, it's good that you live so far from me... I'd be hanging out on your door step with a carrot in one hand, and an apple in an other hand saying Please, Please, Please, can I ????

I grew up on a farm with chickens, sheep, and horses. LOVED to ride that old pinto mare! Haven't been on a horse in years... an other item on my bucket list!!!
