Maine

Out of 18 eggs that made it to lockdown, 13 have hatched, 3 are trying, and 2 (I believe) have died. I am very happy with this hatch. Hopefully the 40+ eggs that go into the bator this week will have at least as good of a hatch rate.
So, which ones are the "surprise gifts" to your husband?

Those are supposed to arrive here either Wednesday or Thursday from Texas.

I also have a dozen Dominique and a dozen Red dorking eggs arriving on Wednesday. The "surprise" ones are an assortment of Marans, BLRW, and Ameraucanas,so I "need" them to even out the egg colors, right?

That makes sense to me! Your numbers are making mine seem pretty reasonable, but I also can't free-range my girls. I've ordered 3 SLWs from Aubuchon and then will get 3 more, probably an Araucana or 2 and maybe a Buff Orington to equal the required 6. That would make 8 total, but I've got to take into consideration that I could lose one. Gotta' plan ahead!

The chicks that hatched today are going to their new home tomorrow, so I can't really count them as part of the flock. I am beyond excited about these hatching eggs! If the hubby gets all bent out of shape about them, I'll just tell him they're meat birds. I hope the assortment has a barnevelder egg or two.

Just remember to candle those Texas eggs for the air cell! Some of the eggs were pretty round, and I just set them the way they were labeled. Dummy me, I did not consider that "WM" looks the same both right-side up and upside-down! Poor little confused chick. I think that one is going to make it though.
True. How many Marans eggs did you get? Were they dark? Were they packaged well?

Quote: Eggs were packaged well, although one in the middle cracked. You may get something totally different, depending on who lays, but I received:
4 Ameraucana, 2 BLRW, 4 olive egger, 2 Barnevelder, 5 BCM, 4 BM, 4 WM, 4? Cuckoo.
that doesn't add up to 30, but it was something like that.

I hatched:
3 olive egger
1 Barnvelder
2 Blue Marans
1 Cuckoo Marans
3 wheaten Marans
1 1/2 Ameraucana

The Marans eggs varied in shade, but were all pretty nice. There's a photo here somewhere if I can track it down...
