Maine

6 of the 15 assorted eggs that were shipped to be are not fertile. I am not happy. On the other hand, 26 of the 28 shipped eggs from another breeder are developing and doing well.

shipped eggs don't always hatch good. That was new for us when maybe 1/3 of the eggs made it. Something about them going up and down in the plane and all that other stuff.

So today 6 of 9 turkeys hatched. I kinda wung this hatch, I never marked the first day in the bator but my intuition worked because I stopped turning them 4 days ago. They all look good also expecting a mother to hatch out some tomorrow or the day after. Anyone Interested in some Naragansettes?

On a different subject, collected the sap today from the maples. I hope the weather stays this way for a little bit so that my tapping efforts are rewarded.

Me, me, me

Has anyone ordered any supplies from mypetchicken.com?

ETA: For those who raise baby chicks--where do you keep your brooders? Also, I have a cat...does anyone have issues with any pets trying to eat their chicks?
Oh yeah. My cats are VERY interested in the whole chick thing. They want to hug them, and squeeze them, and call them George. I have been playing musical doors, won't allow cats to be in the same room with chicks unless I am there also. The chicks are completely inaccessible to the cats, but, given the cat's interest, I don't trust that they won't somehow mess with the brooder light, thus burning my house down. I brooded for the first week in my living room in a rubber maid tote with 1/2" hdw. cloth cover, 100 W red light, then moved them down to my basement in a 3 x 6 tractor with 250 W red bulb and shavings.

No to the first question. As for the second my brooder is in the daylight basement. My cats have never been an issue. Two of the dogs on the other hand

. One was a lab I fostered for over a year. He thought chicks and ducklings were appetizers. One gulp and they were gone. Fortunately he is back with his owner.

Kinsey, in my assortment, the BLRW were not fertile, and most of the BCM, if I remember right. The seller did mention that she hadn't done any hatching since October, so she hadn't tested for fertility. The olive eggers were jumping around as embryos and the first to hatch out for me, and the wheaten Marans were very fertile also.

My Pet Chicken is Meyer Hatchery, which is where we got our first birds. They were decent quality, except for the dark Cornish which we were growing out for meat. A lot of them died as chicks.

I used to set up the brooder in an unfinished guest room, but DH is working on finishing that now. I cleaned out a junky "exercise room" for them this time, and put in a table for the incubator. The weight bench is handy for holding other miscellaneous items. We only have basement under a tiny section of the house, and it is full of water and junk all the time. The chicks will move to the carport when they get bigger.

My sick hen's crop is totally deflated, but she still won't eat. Tonight I chopped up 1/3 of a monistat suppository and mixed it with kefir (2 different miracle cures I read about) and syringe fed her. She is pooping stuff out, so I don't think her crop is blocked, but if there is a fungal infection, maybe that is why she has no appetite. I only offer yogurt and scrambled egg, as I read grains will just feed the infection. It seems like she would be really weak from not eating, but she fights like a bull when I force feed her.

The poor Ameraucana flock is confused. They were a flock of 5. Tuesday I removed the sick hen, and Wednesday the rooster dropped dead. The remaining 3 are wondering who is next! I'm up to 4 Ameraucana eggs to try to hatch now.
