Maine

My family (on my mother's side) is from Vinalhaven and Isle au Haut. Arey, Coombs and Pellet are the surnames. I know several of them are buried there and I have wanted to take the trip to see if I could find the graves but trying to plan a day off to catch the ferry and explore the island has proven a bit difficult.

How cool! I know many Areys and a few Coombs, no Pellets.

I hear ya on the ferry issue... the story of my life. Just a trip to the feed store is an all-day ordeal with lots of planning, time, and $$$ needed.

And missed work.

If I hadn't gone and fallen in love with an island boy, I'd've been out of here ages ago! But I guess I'm here to stay.

My GGG was Susan Coombs. She was born in 1847 on the Isle au Haut. Her parents were Francis Coombs and Experience Arey both from Vinalhaven. Susan married John Pellet who was originally from Long Island, NY. They were married in Gloucester, MA and ended up on Isle au Haut. How they met I have no idea. And why they were married in MA is another mystery since her family is from Maine. My guess is his family were either fishermen or whalers based on the locations.

I'm sure that I probably have some relatives who live up that way. Would be great to meet them especially any who are into genealogy.

Bwah hah hah, you call it Disgusta too! The coffee shop is rebuilding isn't it?

Don't know, don't care. Remember a few years back when it was big in the news I called (national) MayTag about my stupid refrigerator and told them my address and the guy was like "OOOH HOW'S THE COFFEE SHOP?!" Our struggle had made national papers.

it depends on what paper you read and what you actually see. I read just 2 weeks ago that he was closed and selling out the business items he had and people were stealing his metal items. then I drove by 2 days ago and it's open for business. I can't understand the fence. he has a stockade fence that goes up then it's down and then you go by again, they put it back up. it must have slots it fits into because no one would want to keep doing that. now I have not seen the carwash going on lately so maybe he gave that up.
I think it's just something to get attention because rarely do I see vehicles there. (that's why they put up the fence

Well its a long story. I have heard good things about the place from various people, but I got really interested in Maine when I read in a book somewhere that a Unicorn was spotted in a forest there. And thanks! I also planning to do some art work based around Maine too. Plus, I want to be in the USA with the rest of you BYCers. Its kinda lonely being in the UK.

Any idea what part of the state you are thinking about moving to when you decide to move? On the plus side you will at least know a few people before you get here even if it is via BYC and they are all a bunch of crazy chicken people.

My niece did the opposite move. She met someone on the internet who lives in Wales. After a couple years of emails and phone calls they finally met in person. A couple years and a few visits later they were married. She moved to Wales and was there only a few months when she and her husband came home for Christmas. When they went back there was an issue with the marriage visa and my niece was deported. She was underage and the authorities decided she had to be part of an arranged marriage and told her she wouldn't be allowed back into Great Britain for at least a year. One year later her appeal was heard and she was allowed to go back to Wales to be with her husband. Nice way to start a marriage but it will end up being a great story to tell the kids and grand kids.

Well I was thinking of moving to Cumberland, but i want to visit Sqrirrel Island too!

Cumberland is nice. A nice rural area but close to Portland and Freeport. I'm on the other side of Portland in a town that is also nice and rural. I think the closest McDonald's is about 20 miles away.

Well I guess the big girls I took in are finally comfortable. I've gotten 5 eggs this week. 1 last Saturday (while I was at the Sanford TSC swap) 1 Monday, 1 Wednesday and 2 Friday. Yay. It's kinda exciting. I'm just wondering how long they have been laying since I brought them home, it is possible they were hiding eggs around the yard, though I haven't seen any. I still let them free range, so when I would sit there and watch them go in the coop for a bit of food I would go over and pick them up and put them in the nesting boxes (I have wooden eggs in there too), kinda teach them there's a nice safe place to lay an egg. I know my Maran is laying and possible my RIR too.
