Maine

ahhh this rain..I like it for the plants but feel bad for the little meaties out in the tractor. They have shelter but I still, I can't help it!

I have to say I am very happy with the chicks I ordered from PFU. I got 3 bronze turkeys and 3 red rangers to try them out. They have been super healthy and friendly. We put them out at 4 weeks and they had no problems what so ever. I can't recall if they come from Ideal or Cackle but next year I will be getting more :)

Next project...building a chick shelter in the big coop so I can move the rest of the layers out. One of the marans was making a pathetic attempt at crowing this morning so I think it is almost time!
I ditto your sentiments on the rain. The chickens have a run covered with a tarp, but they still spent twenty minutes this morning standing at the door and squawking before they actually came out.

I think PFU chicks are from Cackle, but I wont swear to it. I didn't order from them this year just because they have limited options for breeds. I wanted a diverse flock so I did local pullets. Maybe next year...

Around here people get feed in bulk from Aroostook Milling Co. They sell a wonderful 20% mix of cornmeal oats and barley. When we were getting it I fed it to both the chickens and pigs and they did great on it. You can get it delivered in the forklift size bags.We bought it in 50lb bags from someone who gets it delivered and stored it in those big blue barrels. Dont quote me but I believe it was $250 for 1000 lbs? They have a website, it comes up when you google it.

I bought 50# bag from rt farms and I think it was $5. I use it like scratch

Last year I got chicks from PFU also, and I was very happy with them. I bought them as day olds, and compared with the ones I bought elsewhere at 8 weeks old, they were healthier, friendlier and turned out to be much bigger! Husband and I were just remarking on this the other night...

In other news, It looks like DH and I are taking a trip to Houlton to pick up more chickens on Thursday! I'll have you all know that it was his idea to go there and get them instead of waiting a few weeks for someone to bring them down....!

Yeah, I dont know if you would want to use it as a sole ration...I did last summer and the birds I raised on it grew beautifully, but they also free range in our woods and our yard is a small field not a lawn ;) so they gey all the vitamins and minerals they need. I do know of people that do though. Our pigs really loved it made into mash. The chickens would stroll down and get thier share of it as well :)

Does anyone know of someone in the Lakes Region/Mt. Washington Valley area that is looking to reduce their flock? I want to get a couple of laying hens (I am itching to collect and my little ones have a ways to go). Thanks in advance!

Does anyone in Southern Maine know where I could find a few 6 to 8 week old pullets to round out my flock. I work Saturday mornings so I can't make it to the swap at the Sanford TSC. Any suggestions?
