Maine

Lol!!!!! Hoppy Love the pic!!!

Mustard Tiger- We've had the same issues with deer eating our tomatoes :(

My 10yo screamed for me to help her today "there's something wrong with the chickens". I went running out to her freaking out because they were laying under their favorite bush!!! Lol she was so scared there was something wrong because she never saw they lay down before!!! This is the spot the sprint too as soon as they are allowed to free range. Its the mad dash every day.

Caponizing is something that I have not done but I have a friend taking classes in doing so and she has had a few 'labs.' So far her capons are doing well which means that she is doing it right. If you wanted to know more I could ask her if she would type to you about it. She is in BYC. I know folks who use AI, who caponize, who dub, some who remove spurs... it takes all types :) Some folks riase hatchery and put costumes on their birds. Some folks raise pure breeds or rare breeds and only know numbers... some raise tons and some raise just a few. The beauty of being in a free country and having cheap chickens ha!

NO ONE TOLD ME THIS!!!! Oh, the years of lost opportunities!

I still don't know what a funnel cake is. I never eat anything more than part of a fried dough and a candy apple IF I can afford them. Oh boy, budgeting for fair food is ON.
OH MY GOODNESS, FUNNEL CAKES!! Had my first one at the Folk Festival in Bangor, this weekend. HIGHLY RECOMMEND them and will be having another one, maybe in the near future, at the Blue Hill Fair-maybe.

Speaking of the Blue Hill Fair, does anyone know if they have much for poultry exhibits? Last time I went (a couple years ago), I never thought I'd have chickens, so I didn't notice.

We may possibly be going to the Blue Hill Fair this weekend. I don't know what they have for exhibits, as I haven't been to a fair in YEARS. I think that when I looked at the schedule last summer, the poultry show was on one day and the large animals on an other day. If anyone knows the details, please chime in, b/c it would be a waste to drive all the way there only to find that the birds were only there YESTERDAY!

I went last yr and don't remember seeing any poultry there at all (and since i show poultry, i was looking for them)

I just looked at the online program for the blue hill fair, no poultry show is listed
http://www.bluehillfair.com/program.html

the windsor fair has a big poultry show (354 birds this yr) . they are there this week until labor day- monday. the main judging is over and they will have some birds there that are for sale. if the bird was in the show, it can't leave until monday but if it wasn't, it can leave prior. I'll be bringing over some call ducks if I don't sell them prior. but if you are in the area, you might head to this fair to check out the birds. you can also pick up an exhibitor list and if you find a breed you really like, you can contact the owner (has a phone number listed for each person showing)

In more chicken-related topics: anyone have Red Stars? They seem like a potential option...
Hi Jazor, I have 3 Red Stars--they are 24 weeks old. They are very friendly and all started laying around 18 weeks. I will definitely get more when I need to replace chickens.

At the risk of offending some on this site, I'm going to ask my question... Anyone in Maine have experience caponizing?
Hi LazyGardener, I know you're looking for someone in Maine but there is a woman on BYC on the Natural Chicken thread who has done caponizing and has posted pictures on the procedure. https://www.backyardchickens.com/u/66877/kassaundra

Great news! I saw such a positive reply to these, that I have 6 on the way. I also have 10 barred rocks on the way. Also, I've already become the habitat for flying critters in need of housing--as my cousin shot me a text yesterday "Just got you 5 ducks. Free."

Sweet. Call me a quack.

Cheers,
Jazor

Ok Jazor: I need to borrow $20 from you, but, I'll do you a favor and only borrow $10. You give me $10, then you'll owe me $10, and I'll owe you $10, and we'll be even!

You've got the basic principles of Man Math down. Once you're done owing me $10 you can repay me the $20 you needed to borrow, and after you give me $10 of it you will owe me $10 plus the $10 you originally owed me.

Man Math.

It's proven.

Ash: I'd like to talk to your friend who's learning how to caponize, if you wouldn't mind giving her my BYC contact info. Thanks. I'd definitely like to observe. I think it would cut the coop drama in the grow out pen, and make it feasible to actually grow out a bunch of roos. After the theatrics this summer, I don't know what I'll do if I end up with a bunch of cockrels again!
No one in Maine but I can ask about.
this wouldn't be me would it, Ash? lol
LOL Yes, you are on the list.

This is my gf who does it and since she is a good photographer and she is an emt the info is pretty good. I can set you up to talk to each other but I don't think she is coming here to show you how. Maybe an old timer at one of the clubs?

Hey Jazor, I am pointing at you and loudly yell, "QUACK!"
