I agree with Chickmagnet regarding the DE. It might be helpful as a general internal cleanser and deterant to crawlies in the barn however if you worm twice a year its moot. I also find that crawlies show up no matter how much DE I use and so do the lice worms and mites. Lime, lime and more lime.

Now as for worm treatments I go with Safeguard, not the gel, in the large syringe, found in the equine section. I like the dial turn syringe.

The salt dough... well, after seeing yours doing mine feels rather meek.

First my son left the dough out overnight so it was too dry. I added a sprinkle of water, worked it through and let it sit overnight in a bag. Then it felt fine but was sticking to the papers I put down: brown paper, freezer and wax. I was using cookie cutters and couldn't get them to come up or then come up without damage. Eventually I added a little flour and that helped. but they didn't cook up right, probably because of the added flour. They are very smooth and look like dough instead of the salt granules showing like I expected. They are convex because the back seemed to shrink or bake out. The kids still want to paint them.

We did manage to make some lovely snow flakes for the windows. The whole day was a flop otherwise. We didn't get our tree or turkeys because of the weather. I threw together the snowflake activity and now... dinner and more boredom. Who was it that was so determined to make the holidays positive? Oh yeah. That WAS me. (sigh)

need recipe!!!
everything looks great! I was semi crafty today- made a garland with popcorn, cranberries and the few pinecones I could find in the frozen snow-leaves.... I'm making a "test batch" of white chocolate/baileys truffles right now...

We do DE in the coop, but not in food. They've been eating a lot of pumpkin lately as well, which I've heard helps.

I just cracked open the egg from today, and it still looks strange. Yolk is watery and still some weird stuff in it, but not nearly as freaky as yesterday.

Glad to know who it is! Tigerlily was my second guess, but it's been so long, I couldn't remember which one you had mentioned. She's a total sweetheart too, VERY friendly gal!

Oh, we do popcorn/cranberry garland on our tree. I want to make one for the chickens fence, any types of thread I should or shouldn't use?

For the worms - I did some googling, and yeah, those look different to me as well. I may still worm everyone anyway, since we aren't getting many eggs right now I may as well, right? Are you all putting the wormer in the water, syringing them each individually, or topical?

Mustard, those ornaments are amazing!!

The wazine would be a drinking solution kept out for them to consume for 24 hours then taken away. The Valbazen or other broad spectrum wormer would most likely be syringe into their mouths. If i were to try an all natural wormer it would be verm-x. Although I can't recommend it because I've never tried it myself.

If you want to use DE as your only wormer, the effective amount is 5% of their feed, or 2 1/2 lbs of de added to 50lbs of feed, and you have to do it year round. It takes commitment. And alot of DE.
The Ivermectin is alot easier, a couple drops per bird a couple times a year. I do both, because I like the idea of being chem free, but I am to flakey for a year long worming. I inevitably run out of DE for long stretches. I suppose it is probably Ok, and I have never seen worms in my chickens, but I use the Iver anyway for lice, because I still have mites when using only DE. That may be my fault too for not putting it out in sufficient quantities. It makes the coop soooo dusty in winter too, I worry that it could be bad for them. I dont know though.

I enjoy seeing everyone's projects!

Even though I do not do much in the way of Christmas, it has become tradition to make wreaths, swags, and/or center pieces with a group of teachers. I usually gather the boughs for the group. I've always made my swag using natural materials; sumac and winterberry to add a little red, weird stuff I find in the woods, including a bow-shaped mushroom.

This year, I saved wing feathers while the chickens were molting, and used those. The swag will go on the front door, although here I laid it on the tile floor because it was dark out.

what a neat idea!

Hoppy- I used this recipe- http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/white-truffles-recipe/index.html but I did not use nuts- just rolled some in decorators sugar, and coated some in melted milk/dark chocolate. They were super yummy- now I know it's safe to make them as gifts....

I started making paper origami boxes..then my aunt told me about making them from old christmas cards, so I went with that too...I like both- the paper boxes are faster, but the card boxes are more substantial...I'll snap some pics maybe....tomorrow...

I should have done homework all weekend, but I needed a break. 2 weeks to go...
