Maine

I have blue laced red wyandottes but my numbers are really down on those. I will be getting hatching eggs in feb from my original birds to bring up my numbers. I'd avoid the hatchery route unless you really are wanting blue laced GOLD, instead of red (mahogany red).
how are you incubating your eggs? if the airpocket is on the side, it may have come detatched.
if you are rolling them on the side, couple of things to try- 1) don't worry about it and let it go, when the draw down comes, the chick may still be in the airpocket to hatch because that area will get larger. 2) set the egg upright to incubate and tip it side to side (like the cabinet incubators do) or 3) don't have it roll on the side quite as far, roll them an odd number of times/day so your air cell doesn't always end up on the top (this is just general good practice anyway if hand turning them)

I believe we want to get the new chickens a little later (March?)

I'm incubating them in an incubater. Hand turning about 3-4x a day. I will definitely try putting it on it's end and hopefully the air pocket will float up.

I just read that detached air pockets occur more frequently in older eggs. I hadn't planned on incubating, they were in the fridge actually for a couple weeks at least so this is a possibility. Out of 18 eggs, so far only one was a complete dud. When hatching time comes I won't hesitate to go in and get the little guy! hahaha

hoppy, I just talked to fiance and he said he would like to get chicks or eggs from you. Whenever the time is right for you.

it was approved by everyone present.

Just back from delivering LF Cochins to Augusta.

Hoppy, if they vote on keeping the Club Facebook page, would you let me know????

Woo, finally home! Hoppy and Joanie, it was great seeing/meeting you today! Joanie, your birds are AWESOME by the way! They were trilling all the way home. :) Wound up keeping a splash and a blue for myself, and letting Kim have the other splash instead. She was thrilled. Plus, this way I'll be able to tell my two apart. Hoppy, I can NOT WAIT to give Mom her gift! They are going to be over the moon. It is incredible work! Hope you both had a safe ride home, it was snowing by the time we left Augusta (had to run to WalMart after). At least I remembered to get gloves, since mine disappeared - just in time for the snow.

Hoppy, I'm sorry to hear about your Grey :( I couldn't imagine losing a pet after so many years.

Keric, good luck on the egg!

Clover, those chicks are adorable!!

Ash, hope those teeth come through and she settles down for you. Poor thing :(

Annabanana - what a great gift! So thoughtful of them. Sorry about the attack though.

Paula, I'm sorry to hear you lost a bird.

Welcome lazygardener, Keric, and Gallina!

Widget, congrats on the job!! It may not be ideal, but at least it's something. Did you hear back from TSC yet?

SCG, I agree! That's one of my biggest dislikes of winter, there is just so little light. Give me summer with a 9pm sunset any day!

Sorry for anyone I missed!

Hey, I'm in Winterport also.  Planning to start with chicks in spring, (have had birds in past, both meat and layers.) I may have missed how many and what type of birds you have, what style of coop?   I'm gleaning a lot of info from following you folks.  Thanks.

Hi Lazy G. Not sure if you're referring to me (couldn't find anyone else on this thread that says they're in winterport though), but I have 4 chickens, 2 each Rhode Island Red & barred rock. One of the girls turned out to be a roo, oh well. My current coop is a rehab of a hoop house (formerly my moms greenhouse, lol). My hubby promises to make me a "real" coop next year! There are soooo many beautiful coop designs on BYC, you can spend hours dreaming really big dreams:D. Once I have a proper coop I will get some more chickens. Have you settled on breed, egg layers or meaties? I'm still really new to chicken "herding" , but have enjoyed them thus far.... Welcome to BYC, btw:)

I came home from CMBF meeting with two new birds.
I SWEAR I didn't mean to. You had to be there. I made a first bid on an auction and it ended up being the only bid. They are two very nice Barred Rocks. I love zippers. My only lament is that they weren't Dominques but they are very nice.

My son helped sneak them into the barn lol

Too funny - did you like the meeting - did you learn anything great - I hope to make next month

for planning purposes, the next meeting date is jan 13th Sunday- (normally it is the 3rd sunday of the month but it' conflicts with a major show that most of our members attend.)
