I just got more poo about my birds from SO..... so I am going to sell a few. I am not happy about it but here they are:
2 Red Dorkings pullets
2 Welsummer pullets

All are at pol or laying. I love the Wellies speckled eggs. I have birds to my neighbor who asked this fall for birds so he has first dibs but after its open season. I am going away this weekend but after that... I'll check in with anyone who pms me about them. FYI none of the four are very cuddly. They hang out with me and the kids, are good with confinement and live together currently. I find them to be quiet and sweet. 10$ ea.

The birds are all spoken for. And I am happy because I think they are going to a nice home that will love them. I know that sentiment shouldn't be in all my dealings but they are such sweet girls.

Hopefully I will be more energized by the poultry show. I am very excited to meet so many people who ARE into into chickens and to see so many really great quality birds.

One more tidbit: my Orloff rooster comes tomorrow. This is very very exciting.

FYI:

So I'm home with a sick child today, bored out of my mind. Called NLC in Bangor: all of their eggs are from local farms, mixed colors, fertile (per a store manager). Does this spark an idea? Here's my question for you folks in the know. After hearing about the "Trader Joes" hatches of leghorns from their refrigerator cases, why wouldn't the NLC eggs be as likely to hatch for a BYC mixed flock? I assume that in both cases, the bloom would have been washed off the eggs. It might be an interesting way to try out a new home made incubator!!

I have hatched my eggs out of the fridge no problem. Since they are organic they probably didn't use any chemicals to clean them. I think it takes detergents,rubbing and hot water to remove the bloom. I bet you could call and ask them what they do.
I bet you could do it! I would candle them after a week and toss any that aren't developing. Do it again at 14 days too. You can smell a bad egg a mile away.
If I was going to be in town sometime soon I could supply some eggs for experimentation too.

The question is: How long have those eggs been around?

When were they gathered from the hens?

And how long in a refrigerator?

I always assume after 10 days I am probably wasting my time. And that's with me keeping them in an egg turner at cool temperatures.

But what the heck, it's worth an experiment!! lol

I have hatched washed eggs and refrigerator eggs no problem. However, the longer they sit without being "turned" the more likely you are to have a problem with the embryo.

One crazy hatch I had room for one egg left. Ran out to coop - no one had laid an egg. I had eggs on the counter that had been there about 10 days (I was waiting to blow them out) and tossed one in the bator. I had one chick hatch with a wry neck and weird fuzz on one side. I can't guarantee it was from that egg... but coincidence... ??

I'm not saying it's not worth a shot... I'd definitely do it again, but be prepared for either a bad hatch or the need to cull, just in case.

egg boxes are labeled what date the eggs were put into cartons. that number on the side corosponds to the number of days from jan 1st (ie: jan 14th would be 014 and dec 31 would be 365)

joanie, have you not heard the story of me hatching my flock from eggs I put in the fridge 3 weeks prior to a weasel attack? these were cooled eggs, not turned and out of 12ish eggs, i got 6 beautiful babies.
