Does Limington require a license to keep chickens? I can't seem to come up with any information.

so is any one planning on going to the swap that TSC in wilton this weekend? they certainly are starting early. I won't be there, too cold for the babies still but if anyone is looking, I have a paint silkie roo for sale.

I stopped in the store today. Saw the sign for the swap back in the feed area. It said "Small Animal Farm Swap" Sat 10-2...... INDOORS!!!

I asked the girl at the register about it...where they would set this up in the store. She didn't know. I told her that I thought the swaps would start in April.

She said this one was set up by "Corporate" and that the home office has no idea what the weather is like here.

No they don't as far as I know. I have never seen it mentioned in the town regulations. Although closer to the town office the zoning may change. Out where I am there are no restrictions.

Busy thread.
I want on the list for horses not goats or guineas. Both go where they want when they want because they can. And both can be loud, though the goats are loveable. The guineas are just laughable. I practice moderation so no chickens anonymous for me either. Plants on the other hand....

I want honey and lots of it. Hit me with your best offer. I used to make mead and judged competitions. Now I just enjoy it with my yogurt. Honey is as distinct as the area the bees live/gather in so yes, it has lovely nuances. Orange Blossom Honey and Tupelo are very different from Lavender or Wild or especially some of the tree flower honeys. My favorite remains Orange and Maine Wildflower. Clover and Blueberry are pretty nice, too.

Lazygardener... I love that you know the Spring song from a Chickadee versus its winter whistle. So encouraging that you heard that.

I just got some crap news about some of my chickens. I am still trying to figure out if I can work with it or not-- a breeding issue. As I try to get educated well before buying I was a little put out. Its all of the difference between a beetle green cast or blue or violet for those who know birds sheen specs. This time its the difference between auburn/brown and black.

Gallina ~ Thank you! I did put a beanie baby cockatoo in there, it is so cute the chick cuddles with it and sleeps on it's back and under it's wings and tail It gets lots of attention from us too. I cant find my hand mirror. I am hoping the extra egg I put in hatches today, but it pipped early in the wrong end in two different places,and there was a pink tinge to the membrane. I upped the humidity and am watching it. It hasn't completed drawdown yet so I'm hoping it will be fine. Those early pips are usually the last to hatch if they make it. It is making alot of loud noise and the egg is just rocking. It started that days ago so I think it is too big for the egg. I will PM you if I need one thank you!

I had goats, and loved them! My advice is get them from a knowlwdgable person with a good worming schedule, that feeds mostly hay and forage so they have a good rumen mat. You dont feed the goat, you feed the MICROBES in the goats gut and THEY feed the goat.
You will need a good fence. I used 4ft wire with two lines of electric on the INSIDE of that fence one low so they cant go under and one at their head level so they cant go on or over. Keep the charger wires where they cant reach them. And anything else like exposed tarpaper or insulation or feed bags and stuff like that on their building because they will tear it off and chew it up. They are alot cleaner and less smelly and easier to keep than chickens! I used to go out and have my coffee in the morning with mine. They loved to sit on my lap and nap. I would take them for walks through the wood and fields and let them nibble. They would try to get in the house with is. They are wonderful animals. Getting started right the biggest thing.

I also heard the birds singing and the chickens have been out more lately too. I am plotting out where my new raised beds will go this year and planning what will go in them. I am also planning on adding another 'solarium' onto the other side of my coop so I can divide it into two seperate pens for breeding and raising the chicks. Then they still have the benefit of sharing a warm space in winter and it will make breeding easier for me
To the person who asked whether to get one breed or mix it up, mix it up! I have had a number of different breeds before figuring out what works best he re and what my favorites are. It's not easy narrowing it down, but FUN Plus with chickens that are easy for you to tell apart you will find it easier to observe individual behavior, notice any problems, and give them names

Okay who ordered the snow ?

I don't mind a couple inches. A foot or more? No way. Don't need it or want it. And I thought the groundhog predicted an early spring? Oh well. The horses have a new round bale so they are set for at least a week. I picked up some layer pellets and goat feed today too so they are set. The snow blower is full of gas and ready to go. And in celebration of spring coming eventually I placed a small chick/poult order at Longhorn's today. Nothing much but enough to cheer me up. Chicks are due in April and the poults in early May. I ended up with a couple EE pullets, Welsummers (3 pullets and 2 roos) and some assorted Silkies. For the turkeys I went with Bourbon Red and Royal Palm. Hopefully everything will be available. Last year most everything I wanted was sold out for the season.

THanks to everyone who chimed in about the goats! I'll show DH what everyone says and maybe that will change his mind. He's not opposed, he just thinks we can't do it here....we have 3 acres of lawn, so I don't know what his problem is! Less mowing would be nice! I'd love to have bees here too...but I suppose I need to do one thing at a time

Well that makes sense then - I know Clark would never set up in this cold. Indoors is much better - are you going with chicks? I am sold out a the moment.
