Maine

I'm not sure where you are located but the tester I use, charges $10 for any number of birds. the first test you have to have a certain % of you flock (birds over 1 yr) tested (it could be 100% if you have a small flock and one of each breed. then after that, once yearly a retest and any new birds that you added unless they were hatched from your flock there.
pm and I will give you details.

For those of you who are NPIP Certified, what was the process for Maine? I've been digging hard on the State Dept of Ag website and elsewhere, but can't find any info specifically for Maine on testing costs, etc. Eventually gave up and emailed the state veterinarian, but thought I might as well ask here too while I'm waiting for her to get me in touch with the actual guy I'm supposed to talk to.

How much did it cost?
What do they test for (I definitely discovered that it varies wildly from state to state) in Maine?
Annual testing here like everywhere else, right?
What's the difference between NPIP Tested and NPIP Certified? Testing is an obvious baseline, but ideally we'd like to be certified if it's not horrendously expensive or difficult.

Thanks! We're moving to our new place in a couple of weeks, so I thought this might be a good time to start at the new place totally clean and proper, especially since I don't have to worry about housing for the birds (new place has 2 huge, awesome coops that just need to be swept and scrubbed). Any tips or experiences y'all can share would be greatly appreciated.

I think chickens are the easiest of all animals to leave on the weekend. I just make sure they have enough food and water. A heated water device is needed for winter and sometimes eggs freeze which is a problem on the next day when another chicken defrosts it while laying another. I think this promotes egg eating which is a hard habit to break. In the summer time I toss the eggs to the pigs if I think they got to hot. I remember one Thanksgiving weekend I came back from my parents and I had like 60 eggs or something, not one was broken and they where all neatly laid out in the nest.

The chick photos are adorable! I can't wait to have some. My hatching eggs are shipping out on Monday, so it won't be too long.

We've been getting about a dozen eggs a day. 37 hens, but a wide range of ages from less than a year to almost 3 years. Of the almost 3 year olds, only the leghorns are laying steadily.

I did not order the Carnival acorn squash. Johnny's has a squash named Carnival, but it is grouped with the delicatas, not the acorns, so I imagine it is different.

It looks like the storm is arriving a little later than they originally said. I'm hoping they don't cancel school. I'd much rather have a day off in June.

I was two months behind on this thread and I'm finding it so hard to keep up , it's making my head spin

I hope everyone is doing well in this lovely soon-to-be-snow covered state of ours

This lil guy I hatched out in December. Just thought I'd share because he's *KIND OF* cute :)

Did anyone's phone go off this morning around 3:30?

BF's went off first, with the BEEEEEP beeep of the national emergency code. Then mine went off. We both shot out of bed.

I had no idea my phone could make that noise.

Thanks for alerting me at 3:30 that we have a blizzard coming. Guess I'll get up and prepare.

Didn't happen here. DH says it is a new thing and it depends in part on your carrier. We're in Somerset county, so maybe that is why we didn't get it. I'm kind of glad, because I like sleeping!

Adorable chick photos Coopchick! I especially like "chipmunk".
And snowpetals, I love the striped leg feathers on your guy!

School is on. I'd better get ready!

Yes my phone did that! I went back to sleep since i have the day off, as well as tomorrow, thank god. I am just staying home, making chicken soup and hibernating!

All the chick photos are so so cute. I hope my girl stays broody until I am ready to buy some eggs.

Okay time to get out to the coop and check on the girls and give them dinner scraps. so far this is a beautiful storm!
