Maine

Thanks everyone! We think the chicks are pretty cute!!

9 of 13 babies hatched . silkies and showgirls, had a heck of a time with the humidity as it is so dry in here. 2 were shrink wrapped but managed to save them.
just in case we loose power in this storm , even tho we have a small generator , I gathered up some of my slate shingles that came off from the roof of an old mill in topsham. I have them by the wood stove keeping them warm. my thought was if worse scenairo being that we loose power I can use the slate shingle to keep the chicks warm.
All the animals are tucked in for the night. will be setting more eggs after the storm.
snowblowing and shoveling tomorrow. Yuck !

Paulajon, What a great idea with the warm slates!!

We got this coyote on our trail camera a few days ago along with some coons and crows. A little while back there we had pics of a fox. This is the first picture of the coyote in the daytime.

Keric, how close to your house is this? I can hear the coyotes howling at night. Haven't seen any tracks, thankfully!!

About 1000 yards or maybe 3 min walk. We live in the woods. We don't ever hear the coyotes yelping except for 4 years ago when it sounded like they where right outside the bedroom window. It was awkward a chilling to hear them.

Thanks :) He is a marans. did you notice he has old man eyebrows ?

Does anyone have chickens that actually enjoy laying in the snow? My chantecler seem to do this often. One of my young roos "snow bathes" whenever we get fresh snow

Wow! We live in town but our property borders the power line and a deer trail crosses our property. We get a lot of wildlife walking across the lawn. We also have pasture across the street. It is a chilling sound. I was putting the chickens to bed and had the dogs out with me when I heard them. All of us just stood still to listen.

I just went back to look at his picture. You are right!! He does have old man eyebrows!! Kinda reminds me of my FIL, who I love dearly!!

No, my chickens stand at the top of the ramp, look at the snow like, "Um, no!". The only who will venture out is my roo. I think that's mostly to crow.

holy blowing snow! There is a massive drift up against the chicken coop door- looks to be about 3ft. Not sure how much snow there is out there right now, but I'm really not looking forward to going out in this wind! I made chicken soup, biscuits and brownies last night, so I am all set if the power goes out :) I think I'll bribe DH to do the chicken chores this morning....

Ha, I don't blame ya MaineChick! I haven't looked outside yet but it sounds pretty ferocious out there! Our power started flickering off an on probably an hour ago. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't go out completely!

I just went out only because I had to. The ducks were still locked in their "coop" with no food or water since yesterday afternoon.

Trekked out there, and the average amount of snow is probably somewhere close to 18 inches so far, but there's areas where it blew and there's nothing more than a dusting and areas where there's about 3.5 feet.

In front of the goat house is completely clear, but then 2 feet away from it is a massive build up of snow.

I only got a few pictures off before I trotted back inside. That wind is fierce!

Hello my fellow Mainer's! I hope you don't mind me hanging out in your thread? I was born in Bath and lived in Maine all my life, until moving to Virgina 13 yrs ago with my husband and our two daughters. My family still lives in Maine, and I come back home as often as I can. I love and miss Maine.

In August, I received my flock of six layers from a friend's brother. Turnedout that one was a rooster. I'm really enjoying raising my flock.

Be safe everyone, in this storm.
