Maine

I think one of the largest chickens in the world might be in my avatar.... ;)

So, this fire was caused by an extension cord? All of our heated dog bowls are on extension cords. One is on a designed-for-outdoor-use cord, and it is fastened to the wall. Did the cord get cut of something? The dog dish cords are protected from pecking with a spring-like coil, and the extension cord is out of reach. I'd like to know what the risks are with using extension cords, if anyone knows the details of what happened.

Please let me know when the patio set arrives for the chicken solarium. I'd like to reserve a seat and a margarita. :)

Kinsey-- I do love that Avatar picture.  Did you hatch out any mixes??

That's because she used to be yours :D I haven't been able to hatch any eggs yet, because the hubby wants to make sure we have plenty of room for them before I put eggs in the bator. He works out of state, so the next time he's gone, eggs are going in!

My favorite potato is Carola.

Ashandvine, I don't know what's in the fodder pellets, but I bought a big bags of alfalfa cubes for winter greens.  I soak them in boiling water, and sometimes have to break them up with my hands, then I mix in some feed, scraps, buttermilk, seeds, or whatever I have on hand.  They love it, but they also love insulation and plastic, so I guess it's not saying much!

I use the Alfalfa cubes also, soak em good in hot water then feed them out in a big pan, my birds just love em

I give mine horse alfalfa pelllets, soaked, it's like what you describe without the sawdust.
the next meeting, for those that are interested will have 2-3 speakers on different breeds, one is cochins, one is paint silkies and the other? d'anvers maybe, not sure on that last one.
(and yes it's me talking about the paint silkies)

I got looking into something the other day and wanted some input. "Fodder pellets' for horses look like compressed lawn clippings. I took a few home and soaked them. They look like lawn and sawdust. Not so inspired by the sawdust bit but I was considering buying a bag for winter green suppliments next year. I figured if I soak them and mix them in with other foods, like the cracked corn or cottage cheese or pasta left overs the birds would get more of the greens. IDK the salt content though and do have to review that.

Anyone going to the CMBF meeting this month... other than Hoppy? :)

you might consider some of the show stock. at the windsor show there were 2 really huge birds- because show birds tend to be larger than hatchery stock. they were standard cochins and orpingtons (not english, just good old US stock)

I will have to look into those thanks for the suggestion.. He went through a couple catalogs and picked out white cornish game's out of all the birds in the catalog. He likes the way they look, with their big legs. Then he said he wants something really, really big, so we did a search for 'the largest chickens in the world' and saw Malay are the tallest, and considered gentle giants, and he just loved them. I did some reading and saw they are not an easy breed to keep due to health issues and it was suggested to try Shamo instead, they are almost as tall but healthier. Brahmas and Jersey giants were considered the next biggest.

I should have mentioned the Cornish Game's in the previous post. I wonder if anyone in Maine has some? He just wants a chicken all his own, we werent going to take on another breeding project just yet

I wonder if the cord did not go through shavings or hay, and that sparked the fire- i don't know, just my thought. I have a heated dog water bowl and run the extension cord above the ground, I even keep the bowl outside.

So I have a question for everyone... I saw the tragedy that occured to the person who just lost their farm, my heart goes out to them :( I went to their FB page and saw that they said not to heat your water with an extension cord powered heater. My coop is a good 30 feet from any building, what does everyone do to keep their water from freezing or how did you run electricity that is not insanely expensive??

I have a heavy duty outside extension cord that is fastened to the wall of my coop. I do have electricity and insulation in mine. You may think I'm crazy but even on some of the coldest nights, I have not had my water freeze. I just realized the heater hasn't been plugged in for at least 2 weeks. DH unplugged it to hang heat lamp over my broody & her chicks. I know Momma can keep them warm. I was just really worried about them.

I'm with bucka on this one!

Buckabucka, Your avatar reminded me of a blog post I read last summer. One of my co-workers forwarded it to me. She was laughing so hard she was crying when she told me to read it. By the time I was done, I was laughing and crying so hard, I couldn't breathe! Maybe it just struck a chord with us but I hope you find it as funny as we did. My aunt & my mother said if they could find a 5 foot tall giant-metal-creepy-garden gnome, they would totally buy it & put on my lawn. I don't like creepy garden gnomes!

Several people have asked if we still have Beyonce-the-giant-metal-chicken.OF COURSE WE DO. Beyonce right this second:

Country life agrees with him.
Except for the hornets nest inside his belly, which, now that I think about it, sort of works as an organic burglar alarm. No one ever expects to battle angry hornets when trying to steal a giant metal chicken. It’s much like the Spanish Inquisition, but with more hornets and less Catholicism.

This is a riot! Very entertaining.

And speaking of entertainment, I think my eggs will be here today! Usually, I can't get tracking info to work properly, but my eggs left Texas on Tuesday, and they already were processed through Scarborough this morning! I am excited. Hope it's not a soggy box.....
