Maine

I plan to hatch some of my own eggs too, assuming my Ameraucanas and Basques ever start laying again... And I'll be hatching some mutts too.

I like how the mutts look. No 2 are exactly alike.  I've never heard of a Basque.  What are they like?

I've never found mine to be as aggressively friendly as other's do on the thread, but they are definitely curious, bold, and outgoing. You can't open the brooder without them flying up onto the edge. I only have 2 pullets and 2 cocks at the moment, but I am liking them so far.

Not sure if anyone is looking for a laying flock, but I saw this on craigslist in the pet section this am : http://maine.craigslist.org/pet/3628957397.html

I'm glad the sun is out- the chickens are too- they are all out in the mud...and have found my standing planter, which is dry, and are dust bathing in it.

I've started making some plans for the garden, and have remembered that I MUST have a fence this year! I wonder how the flowers around the house will survive the chickens?? Maybe I need a small fence for those too.....

ALSO one last thing...I must plug...If anyone lives in the greater augusta/gardiner area and is interested in buying local food ( everything from meats, veggies, bread, yogurts and cheeses...) Check out the Kennebec Local Food Initiative. http://klfi.org/home/

Yes they do. The EE roo attacked my 6 year old son today, so that roo is laying in my fridge now, and won't be further contributing to my flock. What kind of Wyandottes are you going to have this year????
This is not the first time I have heard of a cross being aggressive. It happens occasionally that even ours test boundaries or do not recognize us but its set to rights very quickly with a peck and a chase from me or the kids. The freezer works more permanently for sure.

If you want Tank he needs a home. I have one Marans laying but her egg color is not yet dark enough. She has great type. Waiting for fertility to prove... and hoping that the eggs darken.

What kind of fence do you plan to put around your garden, Mainechick? I'm thinking of free-ranging this summer, so I would need to fence also. Last year, I used snow fence to do some rotational semi-free ranging, and it is cheap, easy to move around with step-in posts, but really ugly.
I would love to have a living fence, like a privet hedge or something, but I'd need something else while waiting for it to grow. Plus I feel too old to start a living hedge! I'm not sure what I'm going to use.

I bought some metal T posts and a roll of chicken wire. Easy enough for 1 person to put it up. I had bought the smaller metal fence pieces that are more decorative but have about a 3.5 inch gap in them... even my fat hen could squeeze through. The chicken wire was only breached a few times last summer by flight.

Oh I have no idea. Something not too ugly and cheap. I have lots of random fencing down my tree line..some snow fence, some other plasic fence stuff and some metal fence stuff...chickens wouldn't stay in my yard ( how is 3.5 acres not enough??) and went straight for the neighbor who does not want them around...where as the other neighbor, where they will not go, thinks they are awesome and would love them running around on their yard!
