Maine

I second that winter should be over. Yesterday I fell in the ice, today the goat gate was frozen to the ground and I had to climb the fence (that wasn't made for climbing) to get in and out.

Bucka - is it time to start my onion sprouts yet?

I am kinda sad winter is on its way out. Its my favorite time of year, from november til april! Love the holidays, love snow days, its hockey season (and i finally got to learn to actually play this year!), i love to do valentines day with the kids (romantically speaking, despite having an amazing husband i loath valentines day, way too forced for my liking)...i could go on forever i think. I will admit, i dont like paying for heating oil, that does stink.
This weekend we head to Marlborough Mass for my daughters hockey tournament. Last big event of the season for them. Really a fun weekend, but so bummed that the season is ending already. My mother is stayibg here to take care of pets and kids and she always does great with them, so i am not worried. However, last time i left her im xharge of the chickens i came home to one all wrapped in a towel in the house. She said its feet were cold and she broight her in to warm her up... and she was singing to it when i got here! Lol, atleast we all know where i get my love for animals now!

I have a neighbor who swears that urine keeps the coons out of his corn. However, I can state from experience that if the coons want corn, they'll have corn, no matter how much territorial marking goes on.

I have a family member that has a large ( huge) garden up near Millinocket. When it's getting close to time to pick the corn, he stays out in the corn fields all night with a radio playing to keep the coons away....that is some serious dedication!

I am a winter lover too, but this year has been weird! I did not get to enjoy the snow the way I usually do....because it kept melting!

I am super looking forward to spring....planting season!!!

Coopchick, we do have rugosas here. It would be pretty, but I worry I'd be constantly weeding them out of the garden! They do spread well.

Congrats on the hatching lazy gardener! I feel like I've been waiting for mine forever, and it is only day 5.
We bought fox urine that hangs in little containers on the corn. It seemed to work the years we used it, but it could be coincidence, since we only seem to lose the corn once in a long while.

SCG, yes, start your onions now. I just put some sprouts into flats, and more seed into the sprouter yesterday. I'll do leeks next.

Anna, you sound like my sister. She LOVES winter, but she's in Alaska where she can enjoy winter for many, many months! I love to go out on snowshoes, but agree with Mainechick that the snow hasn't been all that great. Yesterday I was sliding all over the place on the sloppy snow. The stream was pretty, at least.

in an effort to make this go quicker I am offering the trio of blue laced red naked necks for free. If I can't get rid of these soon I will have to just cull the roo and toss the hens with my layers. I love the look of them but it seems like a waste to toss out this project

also needing a new home I am willing to give away the trio of swedish flower hens. The roo is not crested and one hen is crested (the other is non-crested). same goes with these, if they can't go I will be forced to cull the roo and just toss the hens with the other layers....

if you aren't going to keep the roo please don't take these, I would rather just cull onsite and keep the hens than have them all stressed out to get culled elsewhere

And my father in law said that when you play a radio, the raccoons just start dancing! I now have 5 peeping chicks. Need to cobble a temporary brooder together so the cats don't have chicken for dinner.
