Maine

Got ripped out of my NyQuil induced coma this morning by the phone ringing. It was the neighbor informing me that one of my two foxes was back. Luckily all the animals were in their runs and not free ranging.

Followed the foxes footprints down the hill in the back woods to a large pile of black feathers. No blood. Hoping it was a crow.

I am personally of the thinking, leave it in nature. that's why we have those invasive pest, someone "thought" it would be a good idea to bring xyz in to the state, one 1 won't be an issue, but then when it does become an issue, i can be a disaster. why not just pick those bugs out of your compost pile and leave it at that? Interestingly enough, there are company's researching the use of BSF larva as a means of reducing landfill mass. The premise is using BSF to eat putrescent waste, which the larva do a fantastic job at. As I recall, for every 100lb of waste they consume, they only generate 5lb of residue (aka, BSF poop). So used in this manner the BSF would be an amazing way of reducing landfill areas and actually would be used to reduce waste born pathogens and disease. As an end user, families could use the BSF to get rid of their own food wastes that otherwise would end in dumps. The resultant larva could feed any number of animals/pets like fowl, reptiles, fish, etc. since they only need to eat whatever waste we produce, sounds like a cheap form of protein and calcium for your animals. I know a lot of people compost, but the larva will eat anything you don't/wouldn't include in your compost piles! Win, win situation. The more I read about them, the more I think I might try it. One more thing for the to do list:p Will it ever end?

My original five Large Fowl Cochins have moved on to a new home. Their pen is now occupied by their progeny.

Hopefully they will be giving me eggs in a few months.

This breed of Cochin lays large eggs and is also good for nice meaty birds. They are very docile and easy to handle.

I have two cockerels available if any one needs one. They are about two months old

I know it went by so fast... Today is day 18!!! We candled at 3, 10 14 and did a couple last night and only removed 2 So excited!!1 What is the chance of all 24 hatching since they all seem to be growing... including one of the pointy ones??

I have plenty of horse manure. Or will once the snow melts enough to shovel it out of the paddock.
Well, bring some over already! I don't have a truck. I was going to ask someone local. I guess cow farmers put it back on their fields so it might have to be horse.

I suddenly have some more nice birds/breeds here. I need to start doing what Noelle in Lubec does and offer hatching eggs. I would have so many cool ones. The Java pair is totally going to stay. I didn't tell SO this yet but they are gorgeous birds-- mottled anything appeals to me. I never understood the love of Hedemora or Basque up here but I have to say that they are pretty. And holy crap do they get big fast! The Chanteclers are definitely on my list of 'ooh la la" but that's because they look so much like the RO. I do have an Iowa Blue pullet, a Buff Orp pullet and a Cuckoo Marans 'cockerel' who looks like a pullet to me that I plan to sell. They are all 4 mos old. The Buff carries the Lemon Cuckoo gene... if you are into that kind of thing pm away.

Hoppy! I have bantam Cochins from Bob Hawes now! Holy chicken poop!

Here are what I can offer folks for hatching eggs:
BBS Ameraucana (yes I can show egg color)
Salmon Favorelle
Russian Orloff
BC Marans (yes I can show egg color)
Mottled Java
Partridge Chantecler
Maraduna Basque/Euskal

If anyone has a Hedemora Cock that would be helpful or if they wanted three very pretty hens to start their own flock... send me a pm.

Oh oh, and momma turkey is sitting!! Finally! Midget Whites here we come!

Don't forget, tomorrow is Maine Maple Sunday!

It is still frozen to the ground otherwise I would be there tomorrow. Well I guess I would have to fix the tailgate on the truck first. Just need new hinges. Perhaps in a couple weeks I will have more than a truckload available.

Not that I need any syrup. Still have plenty from last year. Only way to go with pancakes, waffles, and french toast. Can't stand the artificial stuff. I do love the maple sugar candy. Really bad for the teeth but boy does it taste so good. I usually go the Saturday before (which would be today) to a local syrup maker. Not as much activity wise but much less crowded than it will be tomorrow. But I didn't make it this year. They are also open next weekend too so I may go. The other thing they offer is maple flavored whoopie pies. Very sweet but very good.

Had to go to Time Warner today to get two new remotes. Seems I have a dog who loves to chew them up into tiny little pieces. That and empty soda cans. Neither is good for her so I have to try and get them out of her reach. Forgot to move the remote the other day and she destroyed it. That and my new (last November) pair of Muck boots.

As upset as I am with her it is my fault for not moving them.

At least TW replaces the remotes for free. And I decided to subscribe to HBO and got a great deal. Six months for $10 a month and Cinemax was thrown in too. Normally they are an extra $15.95 each per month. Only want HBO for the upcoming Game of Thrones season so the $10 is worth it. I've watched the first two seasons and am now reading the books. Great series. Lots of twists and turns.

Icelandic chicks due to hatch next weekend and a few more eggs going in the bator on Monday. At least they are due to hatch next weekend. I'm candling tonight to see how things are going.

Re: mealworms. For those of you who raise your own: Where did you get your origional larvae from? I've read that some larvae sold at pet shops are treated hormonally to keep them from pupating. Any info from those of you in the know?? Also, tips re: culturing, temps, containers, feed, issues for the novice to be aware of would be appreciated.
