this morning he's looking a bit better, eating and drinking but still wants his head tipped to the side and still can't stand. I guess the one good thing that came out of all of this is that I finally got a vent put in the coop after 2 yrs of being promised it would happen, i threatened to cut a hole in the wall myself and it wouldn't be pretty but would be functional.

Big step for us today here in the Waltham Woods...I let ALL of the girls and Cogburn out of the pen. They are "free ranging" as I type. Thor is on high alert, his chickens are not where they should be and he is sniffing at every window and peeking over the edge of the porch. We have had a nearby Coyote problem...I was carrying my pistol while tending the garden last week! They do look and sound SOOOOO HAPPY~ This must be what "empty nest" feels like!!! LOL!

Egg production is getting higher every day, yesterday we had 5, and we are up to two already today...I think I have a new layer as well! It looked like a very thin brownish shell, so another one of our BSL's is dropping breakfast gold! It is so very exciting, I really want to thank you all for your support in the last few weeks!

The Cornish X downstairs are filling up the very large brooder VERY quickly, I am astonished at the rate which they grow! They just finished 100 pounds of feed, in just over 4 weeks, I think we are doing quite well. 10 of them are heading out soon to a dear friend who does not have space for a brooder but has a very nice tractor, that should lighten the load a bit. It is difficult to keep up with the water demand and I have to tell you...they are messy messy birds! The amount of waste is amazing, but it all goes into the compost bin which is almost ready to catch fire!!!!

I wish I started this process earlier, the whole chicken experiment, layers and meaties alike. It is relaxing and rewarding...and the whole family loves it! The youngest cannot reach the nest box doors so he actually climbs inside the coop! It is hysterical!

This heat is driving me crazy!

Those of you who know me understand that I do this chicken business by myself. Ryan Is a good cheerleader, but not much for actual labor

I have tons of growing red bantam cochins - all part of my project to produce better reds ( or at least more for the breed ).

Miss Joanie, the assumption would be that you weren't crazy to start and some might argue that with all those little chickens between you and Ryan that ...well, you started out with a full bucket of crazy lol

I wish I had some of these. I always am wishing they would just take the whole trees and dump them in my yard.

Normal people drive down the road and enjoy the scenery... Me, I drive down the road, and envy other people's mulch piles. I suffer from mulch envy. My 3 x 6 tractor has gone off to spend the rest of the summer helping a friend with 6 chicklets. Nice that it's getting some use while I'm not needing it.

pellepeterson: Congrats on your recent layers. It's fun to go out and gather the eggs. I make a trip every time someone sings an egg song. Funny that you need to be armed to work in your garden... not funny HA HA, but... well, you know what I mean. Perhaps you should give your little one a step stool so he/she can reach the nest box. Kids grow so fast, it probably won't be an issue next summer.

And I get a thrill when I actually see someone outside enjoying their yard! How many of us are only outside when we're doing the necessary yard work??

I still have some Olandsk Dwarf roosters (free) if anyone is interested. They free range all day, return to their tractor at night. They're friendly, full grown, and healthy.
