I have weird birds. I was shoveling some dirt today and found some nice juicy earthworms. Thinking I was being a nice owner I threw the worms to the chickens and turkeys. They took one look and went the other way. So I retrieved the worms and threw them over towards the ducks. They at least decided I was great and were soon squabbling over the live treats.

My girls sometimes turn their beaks up at earthworms too. Go figure!

Hello Backyard Chicken Fans,

Does anyone know what would eat a great blue heron? I saw a bunch of heron feathers in my pond this afternoon as if it were just eaten up by something. I once saw a snapping turtle drown a full grown peking duck. I know snappys are in my pond but where the feathers were found is a very shallow marshy area. I actually had a snappy come up to my chickens this spring on land! (Not sure if it wanted to eat my birds or just lay eggs) I have also had issues with coyotes, and foxes this last winter. I keep my girls penned up now. Any ideas?

Bald eagle. Coyote. Fox. Raccoon. Bear. Bobcat. Lynx. They are all predators who could take down a heron. Best guess would be coyote. I would say mountain lion but that all depends on whether or not you believe they are in the state. I do think they are here but the state says otherwise.

I've seen film footage of a mountain lion about 2 - 3 miles from my house. Also, a neighbor who lives in the same area has seen one.

I let the girls out for a bit of foraging time. They, and my 2 cats were following me around the yard... I felt like the pied piper. Of course, I had my Jap beetle bucket with me... the chickens had to keep an eye on that, and the cats had to keep an eye on the chickens.

I let my girls out this evening arnd 5:30 and as we we're walking about to the garden a fox came running out of the woods toward us, thanks to my dogs barking and running it turned on it's heels and ran to the neighbors yard! My husband told me he must smell their poop in the grass and them so he will be back! I thought they came in the night but I've learnt my lesson, I guess I won't be letting them loose again! I know that try of animal is arnd but it's not until you see them that you think about it!

The sheriff said that there is nothing he can do about it. Its his word against mine. It just very unfortunate that this had to happen. If it was an honest mistake and he didn't mean to sell me this rooster why would he wait 6 months to start all this drama. Maybe he didn't think this rooster would make it this long? I'm not sure what he was thinking. If he had called me and talked to me about his mistake then I would have worked out something with him( If it was truly a mistake after 6 months?). Now that he has started defaming me all over the place, I don't want to work anything out. I wasn't happy about paying good money for sick birds to begin with and now this! It Never ceases to amaze me how people can be so crazy. I appreciate all the advice from everyone and I will keep you all updated on this issue.

I'm wondering if perhaps his own rooster has kicked the bucket?

Sorry for your troubles ChickMagnet! I'm so tired of all the drama some people cause!! Why did the sheriff come with him if there's nothing he can do about it? If I were you, I'd tell him, I'll talk to my lawyer and get back to you!
