Coop chick: What a cute kitty. She'll give you hours of entertainment. One of mine has some Manie Coon in him. He has a little bit of ear tufting, and he loves to play in the water. He prefers to do his drinking from the sink faucet with the water splashing down over the top of his head and ears. My 2 cats are now 3 years old. My hubby was also in a "no more pets" frame of mind, but I convinced him that the kids really needed a pet, and since a cat is so much less work than a dog, it was a no brainer. Then he said, You know how it'll go if you bring one kitten into the house with 2 kids???? Why don't you just get 2? I trotted myself to the humane society before he had a chance to think about what he'd just said! The cats are the best of friends, and I love seeing them tackle each other and do back flips in the yard. They've finally accepted the chickens as part of the clan. It's nice to finally be able to let them out for some range time without worrying about domestic predation!

Thank you everyone! She is a purring machine! She and our other cat are starting to play with each other rather than hiss at each other. Yes, LazyGardener we have learned that when DH says yes to something we move very quickly before he starts thinking about what he has agreed to. We had 3 cats while the kids were growing up. They were my first "babies"! We used to joke that they were the kids older siblings. They were so much fun! I found a FREE cat tree just down the road from us. I'm sure it was a least a $100 deal when new. I loaded that thing in that back of my Subaru. My husband says, "I knew you couldn't drive by that and leave it there!"

treat that cat tree for fleas before you bring it inside you may be treating everyone for fleas.

Thought I would pass this along for those, like me, who feed Poulin Grain. I got this note from Longhorn in Buxton so I know they are offering these prices. Since it is through Poulin I would think other suppliers would offer the same deal.

Poulin Grain is running a sale on Layer Pellets, Pig Pellets, and Sweet Goat 18% - all are only $11.99 now through Sept 29th!

I need to come get grain down there.

Does anyone know who might have a few Call Duck hens/pullets for sale? Pet quality is totally fine. I have a friend whose son has ALL drakes. He wants to try 4 H but not with all drakes lol I told her I would help her find a few. She did say too that she would rather not all white but I told her they often show well so who knows if she would mind or not. I think at this point, Danny, her son, really wouldn't care a snit.

We were gone yesterday all day and got home late. I predicted on the way that the geese would be on the porch demanding their dinner by the time we got there. And guess what? I was right! lol They were all waiting at the front door honking when we got out. Gosh they gave us heck.

Are you sure that little kitten had an innocent expression? I read that more as a, "freeze, we might be caught," expression. Now you have a car and a cat that purr lol

How long can we store feed? I'm thinking of buying a few months worth of pig, poultry, and rabbit feed, but I've been told by my local seller not to buy it in bulk, that it won't last that long.

Grains should be kept in a cool and dry area that is rodent proof. I would worry about really humid conditions more than temperatures around here. I usually have maybe one to two months worth of feed at a time. All depends on which food and time of year. In the winter I try to keep more on hand just in case of storms. And since I go through more chicken feed than goat feed I will have more chicken feed around. Plus the sweet goat feed has more moisture in it thanks to the molasses so I tend not to have too much extra on hand just for that reason. Same with the horse feed. Right now I am feeding grain that pelleted so the moisture content is not too bad so I am not concerned that I have the grain cans (32 gal trash cans) full.

I have a few Ash. I was planning on bringing them to a swap this weekend or next. if he wants to show, then they don't want pet quality. they will be sorely disappointed trying to show and win.

I have some questions...

What's everyone's thoughts on probiotics???
If they have several hrs to free range will they eat less from the feeder?
It doesn't seem like they drink much water...but run around and have fun all afternoon and evening?

Worried about my girls...I love how they run over when I get home from work

I have used probiotics with my problem horse. No idea how well they actually work. I did not notice a difference but at the same time they did not seem to hurt either.

Mine can be out all day ranging the entire yard but as soon as I open the door to go outside they all come running to the porch, where the feed is stored, begging for food. Or I should say waddling up since their crops are so full they almost drag on the ground. So for my flock I would say they end up eating just as much but only so I can get off the porch.

Same here with the water consumption. Mine do tend to roam a bit then find a shady spot to snooze during the hottest part of the day. They do come over when I empty out the kiddie pool or full a water pail but other than that they are fairly low key.
