Got my garlic in finally. Apparently I did a poor job of harvesting it this fall... I had let it die back too much so in some spots I couldn't find the bulbs and was digging around. I ended up with an entire bag of garlic... but despite that I have a ton of sprouts. I filled in the blanks with the new bulbs that I purchased, but I now have two 4x4 plots of garlic planted. EEK.

Vampires, beware.

Thanks! He's a mutt. I got eggs from a friend who had a black spanish tom with some blue slate, black spanish and bourbon red girls. I have some pure BR girls from her from last year, this year I hatched a pair of the blues and a pair handsome brown/black birds. The girl brown/black is in the freezer. The boy pictured above is supposed to be thanksgiving, but he was too big to fit in my scalder so he got a reprieve for a bit.

My public service announcement for today: Always ALWAYS quarantine new birds for AT LEAST 30 days, regardless of if you know and trust the person you got them from, regardless if they come from a certified flock, regardless of if they seem like perfect healthy birds, regardless of if it is a huge pain in the butt.

I KNEW this, but for all the reasons above, I didn't. I am now fighting respiratory infection and dry fowl pox. I have chickens in dog crates in every room of my house. Many may not make it.

I know it's stressed all the time to quarantine, but I wanted to share so that if someone was like me and thought "just this once" they may take the time and do it right.

How old is he? I have two bronze broad breasted that are approx 5 months old...I am still not sure if tom or female...do you ever sell the poults?

Oh no...I have also skipped this process once...thinking it would be ok but ended up with 6 sick silkies within a few days losing 4 of them. Thanks for the reminder! Sending positive thoughts your way for a full recovery!

MEMama - I'm so sorry to hear about your birds and thanks for sharing the reminder. I've started to get lax about little things that I used to be so strict about... I've got to get back in line. I hope your girls pull through.

This looks like IC. The eye bubbles and swollen face are classic. I think I see nostril discharge too. Not good at all. This stinks for you, and I send my condolences. I was sent birds that were sick. I have no idea what it is at this point but half died, and I think they will always be quarantined. Until I know what it is, ie is it transovarian, then they will be in quarantine till I can hatch safe eggs from them or they will be culled.

I am so sorry. What a nightmare. I quarantined birds back in 2010 when I first got them from a swap and they ended up having both wormy poop and mites. I'm glad I quarantined. Hope yours make it through.

He was born during the Cinco de Mayo turkey hatchalong, so he was about 6 months old in that picture. Your tom has quite a small snood, I thought it was a girl when I first saw the picture.

This is my first year having boys, and I'm hopefully only keeping one to breed next year. I'm not sure if I'll be selling poults, but I'll sure be hatching some out for my own uses. I'm not sure people will want mutt turkeys and the whites are really what people want for a nice carcass. This is what the boy I'm keeping looks like:

The girls are on the right. You can see how much smaller their snoods are than the boys on the left. The girls also never display their feathers.
