Maine

Because the ducks know it's supposed to be warmer outside by now! They are giving a big middle finger to the weather, in hopes of it warming up soon.

Is this winter EVER going to end? Just saw extended forecast, and while they are calling for the next few days to be in the 30s, next week and maybe even into the start of April they are calling for very cold temps. I am so tired of waking up to -15F below zero. I have lived in Maine my entire life, and this is the first winter I have really considered moving somewhere warmer.

Girls and I are all sick of this winter!! I even feel bad for the crows that migrated up, I don't think they expected it to be this cold, either! I have been saving bread for them, dogfood, etc. and feeding them as well. Hopefully they will repay me by chasing off the numerous hawks and bald eagles we have!!
I hear ya NorthChicken!! Yesterday one of my friends said to me, "This is the longest January we've ever had! Today is January 76st!" She cracks me up!!

I don't feed the crows in our neighborhood however I do appreciate them giving out the warning calls for my girls. They listen to them quite well and head for the pen even when I don't see anything in the sky.

Our crows showed up about 10 years ago. Only 2 at first. I thought they were cute and they were quite big so I named them Heckyl & Jeckyl. They used to walk up and down our lawn. Now I know they were measuring the place for curtains & carpet!! Then they brought their friends and they brought their friends..... They all know that Tuesday is Trash Day on our street so we have to cover any bags not in a can with a blanket so the little buggers don't rip them apart. I really don't mind them in the neighborhood so long as our trash is covered. They are very smart birds!!

Branch Chickens, Where on earth are you getting your chicks from? Just for grins and giggles, I checked Murray Mc, and they are all sold out of the breeds that I am interested in for my order date (4/7). Not that I really need anything, but am still hopeful that a couple of SLW chicks land in my brooder close to 4/7. I'd love to have some Wyandotte blood in my barnyard mix, but, it's certainly not necessary! Hubby and I priced out a pneumatic framing nailer yesterday... Just imagine the projects I could do with that little baby!!!

Regarding crows: When my dad was a kid, he'd get a young crow out of the nest (Not saying it's right here, or condoning it, but times were different then!) and raise it as a pet. It would follow him to school every morning, often riding on his shoulder, and hang out at school until the end of the day, and then go home with him. His mom had to keep an eye on the windows, because the crow would fly in and help himself to anything bright and shiny. They often had to go to his nesting area to retrieve their shiny baubles.

I also had a 'pet' crow a few years ago. I work at a vet clinic, and someone brought him in as an abandoned baby bird. I hand reared him, and when it was time to release him, he never left! He lived outside, but was always hanging out with us. He went on four wheeler rides (sat on the handle bars), played with the dogs, went for walks with us (usually getting lazy and just riding on our shoulder or head). He would try to sneak in the house any chance he got. He migrated south for winter and came back in the spring, a little more 'wild', but still loved to hang out with us. He could also say "hello". I ended up bringing him down to a wildlife center as the other crows on our property were beating him up, and I was afraid they were going to kill him.
He was truly a joy, SO smart. I miss him to pieces!

He LOVED cuddles and would make a 'purring' sound when you cuddled/pet him.

I am so jealous! I admire corax in general. Wow.

I have a few [not as fancy] pictures to share! We have 8 chicks so far and more due tomorrow!
Check out this one little poofer:

And here it is again in the brooder, with attitude

So far many of the OE/Marans projects are hatching out very well. There's only one confirmed pea comb in the group though. Singles should be smaller than regular Marans though. They need homes so let me know if you want them-- cheaper to you if you agree to keep me posted on development, preferably with pictures.
